Pay Range:

$41.93 - $51.33 Hourly for the 531.2 level

$50.28 - $61.57 Hourly for the 531.3 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.


Job Description

We have multiple openings for Photonics/Laser Electro-Optics Technologists. You will work in a multidisciplinary team to develop, deploy and maintain complex laser systems.

This work will take place within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate, home to the world's most energetic laser. It is an exciting time to join the team that achievedfusion ignition in December 2022, a historic moment in science, opening up new physics regimes and setting the stage for new fusion energy possibilities.

These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

You will

  • Work under general supervision to provide technical support in the design, development, and installation of new moderately complex laser/optical systems using advanced methods and independent judgment.
  • Perform maintenance, operations, repairs, and upgrades of existing systems, working from instructional and established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
  • Generate and maintain system documentation including operations procedures and optical configuration drawings.
  • Perform detailed periodic maintenance activities on diagnostics using a variety of equipment and troubleshooting methods.
  • Collaborate with and provide technical support to Physics and Engineering staff in performing developmental and experimental setups.
  • Acquire and analyze moderately complex data using computer-based data acquisition and controls.
  • Produce supportive documentation and graphics using computer system drafting, design, engineering, and scientific programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 531.3 level

  • Independently analyze complex system performance of high energy laser technology and processes using advanced methods, innovation, and judgment, identifying problems, providing input on solutions, and presenting data to a peer review team with recommendations.
  • Interpret requirements, establish methods, and set priorities for opto-mechanical assemblies, precision laser alignment and tolerancing of laser/optical systems.
  • Serve as a technical lead for engineering principles to solve complex problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.

Qualifications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Laser Electro-Optics, Physics or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
  • Experience with moderately complex electronic assembly.
  • Intermediate skills and knowledge of electro-mechanical technology, including general electronics background in both theory and design while applying the knowledge of electronics, software, instrumentation and controls, or electro-optic theory and ability to solve circuitry or system challenges.
  • Experience in electronic design, fabrication, and opto-mechanical mechanisms.
  • Experience in safe work and business practices.
  • Experience working effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Effective written and verbal, communication and presentation skills.

Additional qualifications at the 531.3 level

  • Advanced skills and understanding of high energy laser technology and processes with the ability to design complex systems and provide solutions to problems while working under minimal supervision.
  • Advanced skills and experience with opto-mechanical assemblies, precision laser alignment and tolerancing.
  • Demonstrated technical skills and advanced level knowledge of engineering principles to solve complex problems.
  • Advanced level knowledge and understanding of photonics/laser technologies and experience working on a technical project team and providing technical direction and guidance to others.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, interpersonal, feedback, influencing, and presentation skills.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with engineering software tools such as SolidWorks, CREO, LabView or MATLAB.

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
