Summary

This position is responsible for maintaining site ISO certifications; assuring accurate and complete EHS reporting of metrics; assuring closure of company and regulatory agency findings on a timely basis; completion of required training for EHS personnel; managing interfaces with the public and governmental authorities with adverse findings and enforcement actions; directing actions during crises; creating a strong EHS culture that engages employees throughout the site in EHS teams and processes. Plans, oversees, directs, and implements EHS management systems to ensure risks to the environment and risks employee health and safety are adequately managed to prevent occupational illnesses/injuries and environmental releases.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Manages and directs site in achieving EHS targets & objectives. Directs development, maintenance, and achievement of goals in support of corporate EHS strategic initiatives
  • Facilitates risk assessment at the location to identify critical EHS hazards and aspects. Works with leadership team to create targets and objectives based on key EHS risks
  • Drives integration of EHS compliance systems and processes into applicable business processes (capital and expense budgeting, new product developments, NPIS, ISO 14001, OSHAS 18001, etc.)



Job Duties:



  • Determines appropriate leading and lagging indicators to track performance against targets and objectives
  • Supports creation of EHS goals for the site manager and appropriate activity-based goals for the leadership team, functional managers, and front-line supervisors to drive EHS culture, compliance, and results
  • Works to assign EHS element champions and facilitate their engagement in ownership of the EHS elements
  • Drives and promotes zero incident EHS culture throughout site
  • Creates and facilitates EHS engagement through EHS teams and committees needed to accomplish the established targets and objectives for the year
  • Works with leadership team and EHS element champions to complete an annual evaluation of compliance for country, state and local regulations.
  • Pursues third party recognition for programs that establish the site and EHS program as world class.
  • Uses established EHS data processes to manage data such as injuries and illnesses, environmental metrics, risk assessments, EHS action items and other pertinent information
  • Create training matrices to ensure that all training is defined and tracked to completion
  • Work with site leadership team and facilities to ensure that all key EHS operational controls are in place, on a PM program, and that EHS action items are resolved on a timely basis
  • Supporting Workers Compensation investigations in coordination with site HR
  • Coaches individual plant personnel responsible for EHS management
  • Ensures company standards are implemented at each site; supervises annual EHS self-audit; participates in Corporate EHS audits; supports and verifies the closure of audit findings.
  • Facilitates 8D investigations of significant incidents; can be on-site following a significant incident within 24 hours
  • Helps develop and monitor compliance strategies. Helps implement EHS management systems and processes to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, Tenneco standards and policies, and 3rd party certifying bodies (ISO 14001; OSHAS 18001)
  • Recommends changes to management systems and operations to reduce EHS risks and ensure compliance with permits and regulatory requirements
  • Drives execution of ergonomic tools.
  • Provides leadership and support of behavioral safety implementations; understands any gaps in execution and provides support to overcome these gaps; helps facilitate sharing of best BBS practices
  • Monitors permit compliance, anticipates potential non-compliance issues, and identifies appropriate responses to ensure future compliance
  • Prepares and shares EHS educational resources and systems to enhance employee training programs
  • Provides leadership to EHS best practice teams to identify cost reduction opportunities, leverage resources and improve efficiencies of EHS in the manufacturing processes
  • Participates in EHS evaluation of hazards associated with new process/products and recommends solutions on how to reduce potential risks prior to business unit acceptance
  • Conducts tasks as assigned by the respective BU EHS leaders
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Working knowledge of the following is required: OSHA, machine guarding and hazardous energy control, BBS and ergonomics
  • Proficiency with software programs including word processing and spreadsheets
  • A team player who is results driven, able to work under pressure, has strong leadership skills, high energy
  • Strong organizational skills, is empathetic and able to deal with issues in an open, honest manner
  • Ability to effectively present information to senior management group
  • Ability to analyze issues, develop solutions, and effectively implement solutions

  • Willing to travel as necessary



Work & Education Requirements:



  • Four (4) year degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental discipline or equivalent
  • 5-7 years of experience with an emphasis in environmental, health and safety program management and employee training
  • Professional certification recommended (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager)



Physical Demands

This position requires manual dexterity to properly and safely manipulate tools and controls. This position requires frequent walking and standing; occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
