Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide a comfortable safe environment for students and staff as economically as possible through day-to-day operation of various heating, ventilation, cooling, power generation, and life safety systems.
When on shift, assume responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Central Plant and all building systems.Supervise the Shift Mechanic.Coordinate and respond to all trouble calls.Keep written logs of plant operations.In the absence of the Assistant Chief or Chief Engineer, make independent decisions concerning operational problems and emergencies.Operate, maintain, and repair, high and low pressure steam boilers up to 100 PSI and 40,000 PPH, hot water boilers, associated steam and water distribution systems, feed pumps, valves, pressure reducing valves, steam traps, and condensate pumps.Operate, maintain, and repair, centrifugal and reciprocating water chillers up to 1,800 tons, associated pumps, cooling towers, and chilled water systems.Operate power generation plants up to 5.7 megawatts.Operate incoming utility, electrical switching, and distribution equipment up to 12,500 volts.In conjunction with Public Safety, or the Hazardous Materials Coordinator, respond to emergency situations.Respond to emergency calls during times when the plant is unmanned.Interact with building occupants, college personnel, and contractors, to resolve environmental problems, coordinate repairs, and projects.Perform tests on boiler and chilled water systems, adjust chemical treatment accordingly, and maintain water treatment records.Operate, maintain, and repair ventilation equipment of various designs and sizes.Maintain and repair various types of mechanical equipment including pumps, air compressors, condensers, food service equipment and plumbing systems.Maintain life safety equipment such as fire sprinklers, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, halon fire suppression systems, emergency lighting, emergency generators, eyewash, and emergency shower systems.Maintain indoor lighting including changing lamps and replacing ballasts.Maintain clean and safe work spaces.Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education
- High School diploma required.
- Chicago Stationary Engineers License, or the ability to obtain one within one year of employment required.
- EPA Universal Refrigerant Technician Certification required.
- Same as above and an associate degree in HVAC, building operation, or related field preferred.
- Experience
- Two (2) years experience in operating and maintaining all types of power plant and building mechanical equipment required.
- Five (5) years of the above required.
- COD Training

- Forklift /Scissor /Aerial Lift
- Electrical Safety
Working Conditions:
Hand and power tools, electrical meters, air balancing equipment, refrigeration gauges, and building automation computers.Generally good, but can be exposed to dirty environments, fire, steam leaks, gas leaks, electrical hazards, harsh weather, and long hours in emergency situations.Must be able to work at heights and in confined spaces.The job requires extensive walking, and the ability to climb stairs and ladders.Some lifting, occasionally heavy.Rotating shift work, and emergency overtime are required.Must pass physical exam at college expense.This position requires a background check, physical and drug screen.

Union ($50.91)
