Purpose of Position

This position reports through leadership in the ISO and will aid the department in several areas including security awareness, communication, and incident monitoring and response as part of a Security Operations Center.

Essential Functions

  • Foster a security awareness culture through crafted campaigns, newsletters, privacy, and an online presence
  • Develop and publish digital communications
  • Contact customers to promote security awareness, incident resolution, and general communication
  • Produce documentation, metrics, reports, and develop clear and concise messaging
  • Monitor security logs and alerts
  • Research current security vulnerabilities, attacks and solutions
  • Data gathering, analysis, and visualization
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to stay on task with a minimum of supervision and seek input from supervisor as needed
  • Strong problem-solving skills and maturity in judgement
  • Self-driven, proactive, and positive mindset
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks when urgency is needed
  • Ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical staff through written and verbal language
  • Experience with, or understanding of, at least two of the following:
    • Information security or technology concepts
    • Developing training, digital publications, or communication campaigns
    • Data protection strategies
    • Data analysis, integrations, visualization, and manipulation
    • Common security vulnerabilities
    • Security-related methods of using protocols and services (sFTP, HTTPS, TLS, DNS, IP addressing)
    • Cloud security
    • Using Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques
Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at one of the 14 UT System institutions in a degree program related to cybersecurity, information technology, data science or analysis, or related field
  • Ability to apply creative and objective work strategies
  • Self-driven, proactive, and positive mindset
  • Intermediate to advanced written English communication skills including skill in proofreading and editing
Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous application of data analytics and manipulation, especially with large data sets
  • Knowledge of security and privacy related regulatory compliance
  • Experience with security event discovery and correlation
  • Prior employment in a security-related position
  • Desire to pursue a career in Information/Cyber Security, Information Technology, Data Science, or related field
  • Applicants who can commit to work for at least 3 semesters and work over semester breaks and during the summer will be given first consideration.
