Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the Clinical Social Worker I/II works within the innovative Citywide Community Response (CCRT) program, which utilizes a proactive, client-centered, and trauma informed approach to treat adults admitted to Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. The incumbent will support both patients admitted to PES as well as carry an outpatient caseload. The incumbent will provide consultation and support to a multidisciplinary team in PES around appropriate resources for safe and effective hospital discharge planning as well as care coordination and treatment referrals to patients on the unit. The adults treated at PES are experiencing acute psychiatric crisis and/or substance use intoxication. The incumbent will provide comprehensive assessment, crisis intervention, 5150 services, case management, individual therapy, substance abuse services, psychoeducation, and linkage to long-term mental health treatment. This is a new and innovative program that will require the incumbent to have expertise in working the patients in need of complex clinical care, system navigation, and engagement. In addition to supporting PES with discharge planning, they will also carry a caseload of high risk and vulnerable patients that are struggling to engage with necessary mental health care. They will provide a new type of service delivery, including low threshold intensive case management. This program will be responsive to the needs of the Mental Health San Francisco (MHSF) initiative and will be fluid in service delivery based on the needs of the Behavioral Health Services under the Department of Public Health. As employees of UCSF and contractors with the City of San Francisco, we are essential workers and will continue to support and provide direct service during a natural disaster and or pandemic, this includes deployment which can include a temporary change in duties.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The MSW rate starts at: $44.94/hr.

Required Qualifications


  • CSW I :Master's degree from an accredited school of social work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • CSW II : Master's degree from an accredited school of social work, and possession of the requirements necessary for application for licensure as a clinical social worker as determined by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Case Management experience
  • Ability to work in a high stress, high volume area and work well under pressure and with deadlines. Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately and be detailed oriented. Able to efficiently prepare written summaries of activities, set priorities, and complete reports within required timeframes.
  • Knowledge of medical and/or psychiatric terminology and psychiatric medication
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to work as a team member in a culturally diverse setting.
  • Able to lift 50lbs and climb stairs
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability.
  • A preliminary job offer and assignment may be extended pending successful background clearance.
  • An understanding of mental health issues and sensitivity toward clients with mental health disorders
  • Ability to work with clients and program staff from diverse cultural and social class backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications


  • Two years working with severely mentally ill adults, the homeless, and dual diagnosed populations
  • One year experience doing community-based case management and the ability to do outreach including to SRO hotels and shelters
  • Prior work experience or training in an acute, hospital setting
  • Prior related UC experience
