Role Description

Form Energy is hiring a Materials Engineer to accelerate processing and characterization of ferrous materials. This role reports into our Form Futures team, a group tasked with developing early-stage technologies to advance Form Energy's product and technology roadmaps. In this role, the Materials Engineer will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to elucidate structure-property-performance relationships through analysis of iron-based materials. The candidate should be trained in safe laboratory practices and have broad exposure to a variety of materials characterization techniques, with expertise in a few. The ideal candidate can suggest and execute appropriate techniques to characterize inorganic materials with due consideration for data quality, cost, and labor. Experience with electrochemical systems is also valuable. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a dynamic team to help define a new generation of products at a fast-moving company with an impactful mission.

What you'll do:
  • Perform materials characterization using various techniques including but not limited to particle size analysis, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

  • Develop and refine methods to physically and chemically process ferrous solids and solutions to meet target specifications.

  • Independently execute experiments including design, planning, data collection, data analysis, and presentation.

  • Work hands-on in a wet laboratory environment to prepare and modify inorganic materials for analysis.

  • Promote safety, especially in the development of new laboratory processes or experiments.

  • Clearly communicate learning and progress across organizational levels and functions.

What you'll bring:
  • Master's degree in Materials Science or Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related fields, or B.S. with 2+ years industrial experience in materials processing and characterization.

  • Demonstrated experience with materials characterization techniques

  • Hands-on experience in materials processing, such as particle size reduction, surface coating, or casting

  • Hands-on laboratory experience with hazardous chemicals

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
