About This Role

The Staff Assistant/Mentor will serve as a mentor for the summer Upward Bound Program at K-State Salina, Student Belonging & Inclusion. The mentor will receive mentoring responsibilities from an office staff which includes the Director, Academic Services Coordinator, and Office Specialist. The Upward Bound Summer program is June 2 - July 11, 2025 and the residential portion of the summer program is June 2-26, 2025, on the Salina campus. The optional cultural trip will take place July 7-11, 2025,The Mentor will:

* Supervise students' free time.

* Lead small groups, including planning and facilitating educational, cultural, and recreational events.

* Maintain communication with academic staff regarding student's progress in classes.

* Handle routine discipline problems.

* Provide tutoring and advising to individuals and groups of students.

* Promote a community of mutual respect and trust.

* Assist with college visits and cultural trips.

* Live in the residence hall with the Upward Bound students during the summer program to promote educational aspirations and performance.

* Assume responsibility of one assigned aspect of residence hall programming.

* Other duties as assigned.


About Us

Upward Bound is a campus-based TRIO program designed to assist area high school students with additional academic preparation, advisement, and encouragement to succeed in high school and later in college.

The mission of the Upward Bound Program at Kansas State Salina is to prepare scholars to persist in post-secondary education by promoting lifelong learning and instilling the ideals of achievement in all aspects necessary to succeed collegiately and personally.

What You'll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Completed at least 2 college academic years by June 1 (junior, senior, graduate student or relevant experience) with at least a GPA of 3.0 and no academic problems, probation, or expulsions


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Must attend the 1-day training on Saturday, May 24, 2025
  • Must live in the residence hall during the summer program (June 2-June 26, 2025).
  • Day Shift staff must assist with community service and college visits.
  • Optional cultural trip July 7-11, 2025, along with college visits.
  • Must be able to work early morning shifts or late evening shifts and participate in physical activities.
  • Must attend CPR, First-Aid, and AED training, provided as on the job training, unless you have current certification
  • Must be able to drive various vehicles (sedan, SUV's, minivan, etc.)
  • Provide supervision for attending students.


Other Requirements:

* Must have a valid driver's license with good driving record.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship

Anticipated Hiring Pay Range

$10.59 - $28.98 per hour (This rate will equate to $1,800.00 for the program (June 2-26, 2025) with an additional $200 for attending the cultural trip July 7-11, 2025).
