Position Description:

In the role of Department Administrator for Pathology you will direct business, finances, human resources and operational activities while leading objectives and initiatives that reinforce MCW's position as a leading innovator in healthcare through its academic and scientific missions. Efficiently allocates material and intangible resources to create an operating environment that recruits and retains the highest quality faculty and staff. Reporting directly to the Department Chair/Division Chief and collaborating with Unit Executive Administrator and Finance Director to maintain an environment conducive to peak performance in all areas of operation. Demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement related to compliance with regulatory and internal policies, departmental resources, and department performance.

Primary Functions

  • Directs, supervises, and coordinates functions and activities of one or more departments/division.
  • Develops, implements, interprets and monitors adherence to organization and department policies, objectives, and operating procedures. .
  • Represents the department on business and/or faculty affairs related to the institution and community.
  • Approves budgets and financial reports for grants, appropriations, endowments, and funding.
  • With support of unit finance team, DA is accountable to develop and prepare budget and analyze financial information.
  • Oversees human resources, compliance, grants, contracts, and financial management of the overall department/division
  • With support of the unit finance team, develops, audits, and approves budgets and financial reports for grants, appropriations, endowments, and funding
  • Coordinates and leads department initiatives related to employment, benefits, and training collaborating with the Office of Human Resources.
  • Oversees review and reporting of expenditures related to clinical, scientific, research, and community services as well as allocation of space and implementation of systems.
  • Leads changes necessary to reach financial goals.
  • Oversees human resources actions related to employee selection termination, salary, and disciplinary actions and decisions.
  • Inspires department by reinforcing MCW Code of Conduct, MCW values and missions, employee engagement, performance, and productivity to enhance departmental effectiveness.
  • Identifies and leads objectives and coordinates with Department Chair, Practice, Affiliates, Faculty, and committees to implement change and development.




Preferred Schedule:




Full-time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours and flexibility required as necessary to accommodate business needs.

Administration & Management - knowledge of business and management principles required for strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources administration, leadership, and performance management of people and resources.

Human Resources - knowledge of principles and procedures for recruitment, selection, talent development, compensation, benefits, and information systems.

Psychology & Counseling - knowledge of human behavior and behavioral motivators required to accurately recognize differences in ability, personality, learning, and motivation in order to effectively counsel and lead direct reports.

Communication & Media - knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques, methods, and best practices to effectively communicate information and provide feedback in a timely manner in a variety of forms.

Grants, Contracts, and Research Administration - knowledge of pre-award, post-award, and compliance considerations regarding grants and contracts necessary for providing feedback related to proposals and coordinating resources.

Tools & Technology - knowledge of desktop and mobile computers and technology as well as department specific analytical and scientific software. Understands database, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, project management software, word processing software, and spreadsheet software.

Appropriate experience may be substituted on equivalent basis

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 10 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Background in Business Administration or Healthcare Administration
