The Opportunity

As the Global Head of Data Management, you will provide strategic leadership and oversight across Data Management, ensuring a cohesive and high-performing Data Management function that drives excellence in service of our strategy through effective management, delivery, and governance of data assets with the highest standards of quality and compliance. You will be accountable for all clinical data management responsibilities across development, including driving excellence in resourcing, technologies, and processes supporting all trials at Roche. You will report to the Global Head, PD Data Sciences & Analytics (PD-DSA), and you will be responsible for shaping the strategy for data management modernization across data modalities, therapy areas, countries, and technology platforms.

You will lead a global, high-performing organization of approximately 250-300 Data Management professionals and external partners to support Roche development. Your direct reports will include senior leaders. Sitting on the PD-DSA leadership team, you will collaborate with senior leaders in PD-DSA and beyond to influence and contribute to the overall strategy and success of early and late stage development programs at Roche.

PD-DSA SHARED LEADERSHIP OBJECTIVES

  • Develop and set a clear PD-DSA strategy and goals that align with Roche's broader objectives, ensuring that you integrate Roche's One Pharma strategy, PD goals, and R&D Excellence methods into the strategic direction

  • Embed and drive the adoption of PD-DSA's strategic imperatives of Data, Digital/AI, and Design (the 3Ds) across your teams' workflows, taking ownership of this mindset shift to ensure a seamless integration of these principles into daily operations

  • Act as a role model for your teams by delivering excellence in all aspects of your work (what you do, how you do it, and the impact you have), fostering a culture of learning, growth, and continuous improvement that empowers team members to reach their potential

  • Define and create clear accountability across each function in your organization and beyond, ensuring that you work in lock-step with your colleagues and partners to maintain alignment and drive cross-functional collaboration

Leadership and Strategy

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for global data management teams across five therapeutic areas and focused on technological improvement to enable high quality data management

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive global Data Management strategy that aligns with Roche's research and development objectives

  • Effectively oversee all data management delivery across internal teams and external vendors for late-stage development

  • Partner with cross-functional leaders to align data management capabilities with evolving business needs and scientific priorities. Actively contribute to enterprise-wide initiatives that establish data as a strategic asset within the company and the broader industry

  • Evaluate challenges as they arise and develop innovative solutions for teams to execute to drive excellence across all metrics

Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships

  • Act as the primary liaison between the Data Management function and key stakeholders across Early Development, Clinical, Regulatory, and Data Science teams to drive alignment and shape outcomes for shared objectives

  • Collaborate with Early Development Biometrics and teams across early development to support data management efforts in early trials

  • Partner closely with PD-DSA Early Development Biometrics to enable seamless transition of assets from early to late development

  • Support and represent data management at global cross-functional leadership meetings and industry leadership forums, fostering relationships with external vendors and collaborators to advance data management standards and practices

  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with global stakeholders, including clinical trial teams, data scientists, informatics, and external partners

  • Ensure seamless collaboration between Data Management and internal teams across Roche

Data Excellence and Quality

  • Ensure global practices and standards are aligned with internal and international regulatory guidelines, with a focus on measurable outcomes for compliance and data quality

  • Oversee data governance processes, ensuring data assets are curated, maintained, and shared responsibly, with clear metrics to track performance

  • Drive continuous improvement by partnering closely with the Digital Endpoints & Patient Centered Solutions function to embed innovative solutions (e.g., direct EMR to eDC), automate workflows (e.g., quality checks, site queries, data validation), and implement end-to-end ML-driven solutions

  • Develop and execute strategies to optimize processes and reduce data movement and rework through innovative systems and solutions (e.g., direct data from Electronic Medical Records (EMR), eDC Electronic Data Capture (EDC), electronic Data Collection (eDC), etc.)

Talent Development

  • Lead, inspire, and develop a high-performing global team of Data Management professionals, ensuring their continued professional growth and ability to drive strategic impact

  • Establish a strong culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous learning within the Data Management function

  • Define clear performance metrics and success criteria for the Data Management function, ensuring alignment with organizational goals

  • Partner with P&C and leadership to attract, retain, and develop top data management talent to support long-term organizational success

Who You Are
  • MSc, PhD, or other advanced degree in Data Sciences, Statistics, Mathematics or related area

  • Minimum 15 years experience (significant experience working at a senior level) in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry with an emphasis in data management

  • Strong Computer Science skills and proficiency in data management tools and software (e.g., EDC systems, CDISC standards)

  • Demonstrated success in a senior leadership role

  • Knowledge of GCP, international and in-country regulations, guidelines and their application, and all other applicable compliance standards

  • Thorough understanding of the overall drug development process, with a particular expertise in data management conventions, standards and processes

  • Experience with all relevant data types (e.g., multi-modal data)

  • Track record of establishing successful partnerships with relevant partner organizations and able to act as an ambassador for Roche

  • Influential and confident communicator

  • Proven experience in leading and managing high-performing teams

  • Willingness to adopt new technologies and methodologies, in-depth experience in AI and digital advancements

  • Strong English language skills

  • International travel as required - estimated at 20%

Relocation benefits are available for this job posting.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $271,500 - $504,300. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
