Principal Piping Designer

Denver, CO

Purpose of the Role

As a Principal Piping Designer, you will play a key role in ensuring the successful execution of engineering projects. You will be responsible for understanding the full scope of each project, including scheduling, deliverables, industry standards, applicable codes, and procedures. Leading a team of designers and coordinating with workshare offices outside the U.S., you will ensure that all piping designs meet project requirements and industry best practices.

This role is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned professional to lead complex piping design projects and contribute to the success of a dynamic engineering team.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Analyze P&IDs to determine line count and estimate isometric quantities.
  • Apply knowledge of client procedures, project specifications, and industry standards.
  • Identify and request necessary information to maintain project schedules.
  • Provide technical guidance and design sketches for model preparation by workshare teams and less experienced designers.
  • Schedule and review 3D model interferences/clashes.
  • Check work produced by workshare teams and junior designers for accuracy and compliance.
  • Utilize 3D modeling software (AVEVA E3D, CADworx, Navisworks) to monitor design quality and progress.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure seamless integration of piping designs in the 3D model.
  • Address structural and pipe stress engineering needs when designing and routing pipes.
  • Review and approve deliverables before release.
  • Conduct internal and client-facing design reviews.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients regarding piping design.
  • Ensure adherence to deliverable verification procedures.
  • Coordinate with pipe stress engineers and implement necessary piping modifications.
  • Perform piping drawing checking and verification in both office and field settings.
  • Develop piping models, pipe supports, and equipment models using AVEVA 3D.
  • Design general plant layouts with a focus on safety, maintenance, and construction feasibility.
  • Conduct field investigations and walkdowns to gather accurate site data for design implementation.
  • Convert LIDAR scans and site photographs into constructible designs.
  • Work on projects involving existing facilities with significant design constraints.
  • Manage project changes and provide change order justifications to clients.
  • Support proposal development by estimating hours required for deliverables.

Qualifications / Skillset:

Technical & Industry Experience:



  • 15+ years of progressive experience in piping design.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and the design process.
  • Effective communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to identify and resolve technical problems independently.
  • Proficiency in advanced PC, 2D CAD, and 3D CAD tools.
  • Experience in advanced design techniques and design tool utilization.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and manage priorities.
  • Commitment to customer service and functional problem-solving.
  • Experience with field assignments and willingness to travel is preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within teams.
  • Extensive experience in piping and layout design for power generation and industrial facilities, with chemical facility experience being a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years of AVEVA E3D experience.
  • Proficiency in Microstation V8i, AutoCAD, and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • 10 years of experience using 3D model design review software (CADworx, AVEVA E3D).


Education, Accreditation, Training:



  • Degree in a 2- or 3-year technical diploma program with piping design training or an Associate's degree.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.


Colorado Applicants:

* Salary Range is $127,816-$187,965

* Benefits: Eligible for PTO, 401k, medical, vision, dental, etc.
