Basic Function

Lead Counsel, Feedstock & Energy, Supply Chain will lead a team that provides legal advice and strategic support for LyondellBasell's Feedstocks & Energy and Supply Chain functions globally within company guidelines, policies, and procedures. The team's remit includes support of the "Connected for Value" (CfV) initiative, a strategic priority to ensure long term competitiveness through value chain optimization and trading activities. The position is expected to contribute both individually and through a high performing team, communicate effectively in a driven, high achieving environment, and advise senior management.

The position will be based in Houston and report to the Deputy General Counsel, Commercial.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Be the primary legal resource for the teams led by LYB's SVP, Global Feedstocks & Energy and LYB's VP Global Supply Chain by providing strategic and legal advice, and representing Legal on their respective leadership teams.
  • Provide legal and strategic advice on the company's commodity trading & value chain optimization efforts, including design and enforcement of fit for purpose processes, trading risk policy, delegations of authority, and RACI allocation consistent with CfV's governance, structure, compliance, and risk management capabilities.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and direction for the Legal team supporting Feedstocks & Energy and Supply Chain, composed of up to three additional members, which will support those respective functions.
  • Review, negotiate, and advise on commercial purchase and supply contracts, trading agreements, and supply chain vendor agreements; draft policies, procedures, and other complex legal documents; manage external counsel on discrete projects and engagements; and develop and conduct training programs as needed.
  • Be a contributing member of the Legal Commercial team by advising on general legal and commercial issues, and coordinate with U.S., European, and Asia Pacific team members to execute global commercial practices and identify areas of common need for LYB, and support other cross-functional teams in complex programs or initiatives.
  • Work closely with legal leadership to provide delivery of first class and proactive legal advice for internal business clients, and acts as a regional resource for colleagues, including directing the work of other staff members.
  • Possess and apply a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of Legal risk management to the completion of complex assignments.

Min. Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent degree required
  • Qualified lawyer with relevant in-house experience
  • Typically, 12+ years of post-qualification experience in a major law firm or corporation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preferred: Experience in the chemical, energy or engineering industry
  • Preferred: Experience supporting value chain optimization, commodity trading, and/or commercial hedging transactions, and practical experience with commercial decisions and strategic commercial relationships and the legal issues that arise in such transactions
  • Preferred: Management experience and coaching skills
