Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Environment, Health & Safety Office is hiring a Workplace Safety Coordinator to expand our ability to track hazardous building materials, coordinate campus hot works/fire code maintenance programs, and provide workplace safety training and outreach. The Workplace Safety Coordinator will be working directly with contractors and employees across all campus units.

About the Department of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S):
EH&S provides services to help ensure the health and safety of those working on campus. The team provides guidance, technical consultations, and expertise to the campus community in the areas of biological, chemical, environmental, engineering, radiation, fire safety, occupational health, and workplace safety.

About the Division of FP&M:
The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities. FP&M works behind the scenes to coordinate campus planning, manage design and construction, maintain and operate buildings and grounds, supply utility services, ensure health and safety, and provide parking and transportation services.


Responsibilities:
Provides consultation, performs inspections, and contributes to emergency plan creation in a specific area of specialty so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Makes recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assesses hazards using relevant regulatory methodologies.

  • 40% Provides basic knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders in a specialized area of safety such as biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
  • 40% Assists with planning and executing technical inspections and consultations to measure compliance and identify practices that ensure safe operation of equipment
  • 5% Assists with the planning of emergency plans and protocols
  • 15% Assists with logistical activities and investigations of specific health & safety cases, and communicates findings to stakeholders

Qualifications:

Required:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to share technical information in a way that is understandable to those without technical expertise
- Customer service oriented

Preferred:
- Associate Safety Professional
- Certified Fire Protection Specialist
- Professional experience with a focus on workplace safety


License/Certification:

Required
Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

Monday-Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.


Appointment Type, Duration:

Terminal, 24 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding


Salary:

Minimum $27.50 HOURLY
Depending on Qualifications
The starting salary for the position is $27.50 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Additional Information:

This is a 2-year University Staff-Project position and will qualify for benefits.
