Intern, R&D Graduate Year-Round, Materials and Failure Modeling, Remote

What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Materials and Failure Modeling Department is seeking a highly motivated and productive individual to work in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment with a focus on computational constitutive modeling. Key thrusts are the implementation and performance of different numerical methods across a range of engineering applications. There are significant opportunities to partner with in-house code development teams, material model developers, and analysts to work on challenging problems utilizing world-class computational resources. In this role, you may undertake a range of tasks including:

• Collaborate daily with subject matter experts at Sandia on the development of modeling approaches to predict material behavior, potentially including failure, using a variety of numerical methods

• Develop and implement computational capabilities for use in a production finite element environment

• Investigate model performance across a variety of scales and environmental regimes

• Apply the principles of material mechanics and advanced computational finite-element analysis to provide credible solutions to engineering problems

Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

• Earned bachelor's degree

• Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program

• Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0

• Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer

• Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire:

• Experience and knowledge of nonlinear material behavior, mechanics of non-linear materials, fracture and failure modeling, and/or computational mechanics

• Experience and knowledge of metal plasticity

• Experience in computer programming and code development with languages, such as C/C++, Fortran, Python, etc.

• Experience with and knowledge of numerical methods and solutions of non-linear systems

• Familiarity with the implementation of constitutive models in finite element codes

• Experience performing finite element simulations of materials and structures subjected to complex and extreme loading conditions, up to and including failure modeling

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

Security Clearance:
