Job Summary
The Research Engineer will support experimental and applied research in advanced sensing technologies, nanomaterials, and microfluidic systems within the Mechanical Engineering Department. The position involves developing and integrating innovative sensing platforms, working with advanced materials and analytical techniques, and collaborating on multidisciplinary research projects aimed at advancing engineering applications in biomedical, environmental, and industrial domains. A PhD in Materials Science and Engineering is desired.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct research and development in sensing technologies, nanomaterials, and microfluidic platforms.
  • Design and optimize experimental setups for real-time monitoring and analysis of complex systems.
  • Operate and maintain specialized laboratory instrumentation related to optical, electrochemical, and mechanical sensing.
  • Develop and implement surface chemistry techniques, nanomaterial characterization methods, and sensor functionalization approaches.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data using quantitative and computational methods.
  • Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and students on engineering solutions for biosensing, environmental monitoring, and other applications.
  • Assist in developing research proposals, technical reports, and publications.
  • Maintain laboratory safety protocols and ensure the availability of necessary research materials and equipment.
  • Support the supervision and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students involved in related research projects.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Degree in Engineering that is relevant to the area of research.

Level I: B.S. in Engineering and no experience.

Level II: B.S. in Engineering plus 2 years professional experience. Experience must include at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.

Substitutions allowed for Education:
When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
