What you'll do

As a mechanical engineer in the Atlanta, GA (Duluth) office, you will have the opportunity to design, test, and troubleshoot complex antenna systems used in a variety of applications and platforms worldwide for both commercial and government customers. Viasat has deployed mobility antennas on commercial jets, residential terminals in rural communities, and ground stations in remote areas around the globe. Each system has a unique set of technical, environmental, and site challenges to understand and resolve.

The mechanical team is responsible for the conceptualization, design, analysis, test, and manufacturability of antenna systems. The team collaborates with other engineers, designers, and operations personnel to deliver comprehensive solutions that meet the customer requirements.


The day-to-day

This role would focus on sustaining all commercial and government mobility antenna products by:

  • Troubleshooting and resolution of manufacturability, quality, and supplier issues for components and sub-assemblies
  • Design, analysis, review, and justification of new parts, modifications, or fixtures
  • Creation and validation of test plans and procedures to test hardware onsite or at supplier
  • Hands-on support as soon as a problem is identified, alongside the operations and engineering teams
  • Solving problems with an emphasis on data and a multidisciplinary team approach

This role requires adaptability and communication to ensure all production lines are pro-actively supported. There would be opportunities for future career growth in this role, both as a mechanical engineer and technical leader, depending on your demonstrated ability to solve problems and maintain the product lines.


What you'll need

  • 1-3 years of experience and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience with industry standard CAD tools such as Solidworks
  • Knowledge of ASME standard drafting practices
  • In-office minimum 3 days per week, up to 5 days per week as needed by the program team
  • Ability to join the Drug and Alcohol (D&A) program to support airborne hardware and testing
  • US Citizenship required
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

What will help you on the job

  • Experience with interpreting and applying GD&T to designs and drawings for manufacturability
  • Solid understanding of metal fabrication processes, especially machining, casting, welding, and sheet forming processes
  • Experience with DO-160G and/or MIL-STD testing and verification
  • Experience with antenna or drivetrain design and assembly
  • Previous internship or work experience supporting a product line
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Salary range

$86,500.00 - $136,000.00 / annually.
For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $107,000.00- $161,000.00/ annually
