What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced R&D Systems Engineer to become part of the Air Delivered Weapons System Surveillance team supporting a developmental program. Our team leads the planning, execution, analysis and reporting of the system-level laboratory and flight tests that inform the assessment of the weapon. We have a position for a self-starter who will join the system surveillance team developing the activities for the Sea Launched Cruise Missile program, potentially including flight tests. The selected candidate will participate in planning and execution of testing program, lead anomaly investigations, and will be required to coordinate with internal and external partners.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

• Lead technical efforts related to early risk management to identify and address potential issues on the program.

• Interface with SNL Systems and external stakeholders in program development initiatives of strategic significance across technical, operational, and programmatic disciplines.

• Deliver written (e.g. engineering authorizations) and/or oral communication to customers and partners.

• Demonstrate technical breadth and depth in the development and implementation of surveillance metrics to quantitatively assess program effectiveness.

• Collaborate with or lead teams that include internal and external personnel (i.e., National Nuclear Security Administration customers, DoD customers, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, DoD contractors, Kansas City National Security Campus, and the Pantex production agency).

  Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel is required for this position.

Salary Range:

$114,000 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

• A Bachelor's degree in a relevant STEM (e.g., physics, computer science) discipline and five (5) years of relevant experience.

• Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D Systems Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

• Graduate degree in STEM or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).

• Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LLNL) and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).

• Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

  Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

• Three years of experience in Nuclear Weapons systems engineering or system evaluation.

• Experience in Weapon System Development or Life Extension Programs.

• Experience leading risk management in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

About Our Team:

The primary objective of our organization is to assure that the US nuclear weapon stockpile remains safe, secure, and reliable as the underlying basis of the US nuclear deterrent capability.

Department members provide the technical and programmatic leadership for system-level laboratory and flight-testing programs for stockpile air delivered weapon systems. In support of weapon modernization programs, we collaborate to develop requirements for the weapon, future testers, and new data analysis software. Ultimately, we provide engineering support for the life cycle of the weapons, including special studies, testing and data analysis, and leading root cause investigations that can stem from testing. Conducting the data analysis and reporting on weapon performance requires a thorough understanding of the technical performance of the weapon and data collection systems. We are responsible for communicating test results to our customers and stakeholders through presentations or written reports. Each department member is encouraged to pursue continuous improvement in personal technical capabilities, teaming skills, and innovative processes and procedures to be able to effectively manage a growing myriad of increasingly complex technical challenges.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
