Job Summary

Operates radiologic equipment to make clinical diagnostic x-ray films as directed by care providers and performs routine diagnostic procedures.

Essential Functions

  • Performs radiographic or nuclear medicine examinations under direct supervision of technologist/manager. Processes film including evaluating film for technical quality. Performs test with portable equipment in patient's room when necessary. Must know how to operate all assigned areas of Diagnostic Radiology effectively and efficiently. Must be well skilled in positioning all rooms. Must keep repeats to a minimum and follow protocol. Quality check films before sending to radiologist to include markers, all pertinent information needed for appropriate dictation. Writes additional information on request as needed. Responds to codes and other emergency situations appropriately.

  • Transports patients to radiographic room; prepares and maintains room. Checks equipment and supplies on a regular basis. Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of work areas. Positions and transfers patients comfortably. Selects proper technical factors on an individual basis. Introduces self and explains procedure to patient. Maintains records and operates equipment to produce the most reliable information on patients. Uses proper body mechanics when moving patients or equipment. Recognizes significant adverse reactions and acts appropriately. Contacts nurse on patient reports as necessary.

  • Explains procedure to patient and introduces self and identifies department. Informs patients and families of all delays. (including calling inpatient's room when procedure is delayed more than 1 hour). Trains other students. Assist other technologists when not busy in assigned area. Keeps room cleaned and stocked at all times. Access patient's condition and level of cooperation and makes appropriate judgment of proper care.

  • Acquires requisition and checks for appropriate clinical. Charges procedure and supplies when exam is completed. Operates the PAC's system appropriately and verify studies before sending to archive. Understand and operates the PACS/EMR systems related to patient information confidentially. Completes paperwork as exam are completed or canceled. Charges appropriate contrast and supplies.

  • Consistent use of personal radiation monitoring devices. Proper storage of personal monitoring devices. Knowledge and effective use of proper procedures for managing and containment of a radioactive spill. Utilize ALARA principles at all times. Comprehend and follow the departmental and regulatory policies on recordable events and misadministration's. When applicable properly dispose of or store radioactive materials and waste. Be alert to and aware of nonauthorized persons in the nuclear medicine department. Such persons are to be challenged as to their identity and purpose for being in the nuclear medicine department. This applies to all unknown persons irrespective of uniform dress or official Prisma Health identification badges. All radioactive materials sources are to be locked in the hot lab if the department is left devoid of specific nuclear medicine personnel.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Post High School education up to 18 months. Enrolled in accredited radiology program or nuclear medicine program

  • Experience - One (1) year as radiology student or completion of at least one nuclear medicine clinical rotation at Prisma Health

  • SCRQSA- Limited Practice Radiographer-General

  • CPR

  • Applicable certification of NMTCB(CNMT) or ARRT(N) within one (1) year
