Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

Position: Staff Accountant - Financial Reporting (Hybrid Remote)

The Staff Accountant - Financial Reporting is a key member of the finance team supporting the organization in ensuring timely, complete and accurate presentation of financial activities in compliance with GAAP. Reporting to the Accounting Supervisor - Financial Reporting, the Staff Accountant - Financial Reporting will be responsible for general ledger transaction processing, financial reporting and analysis, cost allocations, audit support, implementation and maintenance of internal controls, and safeguarding agency assets. Provides support on fiscal matters in accordance with Volunteers of America - Greater New York, Inc. policy and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in accounting and one year of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and FASB standards is required.
  • This employee must have strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to organize work and perform duties with a high level of accuracy is required.
  • S/he will also have a collaborative work style and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office suite with strong Excel skills is required.



Staff Accountant (Financial Reporting) Principal Responsibilities:



  1. Prepare standard journal entries for daily business transactions and the month-end closing, including cost allocations. Adhere to the monthly general ledger close calendar to allow for appropriate review by a supervisor.
  2. Analyze and reconcile various general ledger and sub-ledger transactions and account balances monthly, including bank reconciliations, to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  3. Prepare monthly, quarterly and yearly financial reporting and analysis and ad hoc reports.
  4. Review, record, and reconcile company credit card activity.
  5. Enter invoices for administrative and allocable expenditures into Microsoft Business Central. Ensure entries are accurately coded and supported for payment. Monitor accounts payable entries to ensure invoices are approved and payments are made timely and accurately.
  6. Provide support for internal and external audit engagements.
  7. Maintain knowledge and understanding of Volunteers of America-Greater New York policies and procedures to comply with regulations and safeguard agency assets.
  8. Provide support on financial initiatives and projects, and perform other related duties as required.
  9. Perform other related duties as requested.
