About the Job

Conducts research in the field of soil science, with a focus on investigating the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils. Perform structured research-related work assignments. Identifies problems and relevant issues in straightforward situations, assesses potential responses using standard procedures, and makes sound decisions accordingly. Works as a member of a research team. Receives instruction, guidance and direction from PI and others.

This will be minimum of a six-month appointment.

Job Duties:

  • (25%) Conduct field sampling of urban soils across the Minneapolis-St Paul metropolitan area and in out-state Minnesota.
  • (20%) Prepare soil samples for analysis by proximal soil sensors (pXRF and MIR).
  • (15%) Conduct routine laboratory maintenance (protocol updates, equipment maintenance, etc)
  • (15%) Conduct chemical and physical analyses of soil samples to include laser particle size analysis, and chemical characterization.
  • (25%) Work closely with community research partners in Minneapolis-St Paul to fulfill on-site research needs.
Qualifications

Required

  • BA/BS degree, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years.
  • Applies knowledge and skill to a recurring task or activity with emphasis typically on precision and timeliness of execution.
  • Previous experience working with community groups or on community engaged research.
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience in soil science field and laboratory settings, experience conducting soil sampling and soil morphological descriptions in urban environments, as well as soil chemical and physical measurements in the laboratory.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with using Survey 123 to enter urban soil survey pedon data into the USDA-NASIS database.
  • Experience with coordinating field sampling logistics and familiarity with soil sampling equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of laboratory and field safety protocols. Current CPR, EMT and/or Wilderness First Aid certifications.
  • Experience with preparing and analyzing soil samples using Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy (MIR) or other proximal soil sensing techniques.
  • Valid drivers license.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $24.96 - $25.97 depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
