Student: Software Engineer Assistant

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking to hire a talented undergraduate student with more than a year of school remaining. The selected candidate will:

  • Perform application evaluation tests; collect, analyze, and present results
  • Help write automation scripts to improve the application evaluation process and perform other repeatable tasks; may assist with writing evaluation applications
  • Help incrementally evaluate a software development kit and features of an application hosting framework, along with associated documentation
  • Help create reports detailing benchmarking results and other evaluation findings
  • Work closely with other software developers on a daily basis
SDL supports a variety of missions, including NASA's vision to reveal the unknown for the benefit of humankind and the Department of Defense's aim to protect our nation on the ground, in the air, and in space. Our sensors, satellites, software systems, and science and engineering play an essential role in some important missions you've heard of, and others that you haven't.

Required Qualifications:
  • Must be a student pursuing a CS or other relevant technical degree with at least one year of school remaining
  • Must be able to work 15-20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week during the summer, preferably in 4+ hour blocks of time
  • Proficiency and experience with Java, Python, and/or C++
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Must be consistently detail-oriented, organized, and attentive to detail
  • Ability to work well individually and as part of a team
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and be able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Linux
  • Familiarity with principles of software system design, development, deployment, and testing
  • Familiarity with software development processes (revision control, peer reviews, documentation standards)
  • Academic or part-time experience working on a software development team
  • Comfortable using version control tools such as Git and Bitbucket
  • Willingness to learn about and use a wide array of technologies, different programming languages, and complex systems
  • Experience with Confluence and Jira
