This job assumes responsibility for operation, technical and personnel management related duties for the Histology Department and for solving day to day lab operational problems and notifying Lab Manager/Physician Supervisor of problems as appropriate. Maintains a patient /client focused section that complies with the standards of accrediting/regulatory agencies; oversees training of all personnel in section and performs technical work as necessary; promotes and ensures compliance with Ochsner Health System and Laboratory policies and practices. Maintains confidentiality of patient and personnel-related information at all times and exhibits a high degree of professional excellence characterized by sound independent judgment, reliability, initiative, flexibility and a high standard of ethics.

Education

Required - Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical or biological science

Work Experience

Required - 4 years training and experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty under a qualified Medical Director

Experience working in controlled environment, following safety measures to minimize exposure to chemicals, body fluids, blood borne pathogens, etc.

Certifications

Required - Current Louisiana license or temporary license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Generalist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Specialist
Meets CLIA and CAP requirements for testing personnel relative to scope of duties
Meets CLIA standards as a general laboratory supervisor
ASCP certification as a Histotechnologist or Medical Technologist
Any incumbent certified by ASCP on or after January 1, 2004 must successfully complete the requirements of the ASCP's Certification Maintenance Program

Preferred- Current license issued by the State of Louisiana as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist - Specialist

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Judgmental skills in order to identify and solve problems as well as handle difficult situations.
  • Analytical skills necessary to prepare/interpret a variety of management reports, analyze complex data and trouble shoot equipment.
  • Analytical skills to collect data, perform calculations, maintain system logs and operate laboratory computer equipment.
  • Skills to manage stress in order to maintain a professional atmosphere and provide quality service.
  • Skills to work independently.
  • Ability to work outside of regularly scheduled hours, including weekends and holidays, when deemed necessary by management.

Heavy Work - Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Mechanical lifting devices (e.g., carts, dollies, etc.) or team lifts should be utilized.
Must be able to stoop, bend, reach and grab with arms and hands, manual dexterity.
Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.
Must be able to travel throughout and between facilities.
Must be able to work a flexible work schedule (e.g. more than 8 hours a day, weekend).

Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue.

The incumbent works in a patient care area; works in an area where patients enter; works directly with patients; and/or works with specimens that could contain communicable diseases. There may be an occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.
