Job Description - Director, Product Governance (Sun Life International)

Reporting into the AVP, Pricing and Inforce Management, the director is responsible for the financial management of Sun Life International's (SLI's) Life products. SLI issues Non-Par adjustable Universal Life and Indexed UL products. In addition, we manage a closed Par block. The director will act as SLI's dividend actuary and adjustable actuary and own the Par and Adjustable Operating Guidelines for SLI. This is a leadership role within the product function and will manage two actuarial staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead annual dividend recommendation process for Sentinel (SLI's Par product) and adjustable recommendation for Future (Non-Par Adjustable product.) Develop and review recommendation with multiple 1st and 2nd line stakeholders. Facilitate the resolution of follow-ups and obtain appropriate signoffs, then implement the scale.
  • Be the go-to Subject Matter Expert on all items related to Sentinel and Future. Provide support for SLI and SLSG for questions and queries related to the products, including Client and Broker queries.
  • Recommend crediting rate actions on UL, Indexed UL and Wealth products to the SLI Product Steering Committee.
  • Provide related business support, such as for Valuation & Modeling, scenario analysis, administrative implementation, and other ad-hoc analysis.
  • Develop and evaluate potential dividend and adjustable methodology enhancements.
  • Distill complex topics and use appropriate judgment to effectively communicate issues, information, and recommendations to peers and management.
  • Collaborate across and build relationships with multiple cross-functional areas, such as Actuarial, Finance, Regional Office, ALM, Second Line, etc.
  • Organize and drive the Adjustable Governance Committee and Par Governance Committee processes, including setting the agenda, chairing the meeting, and influencing the discussion on critical issues.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • FSA or equivalent designation.
  • Minimum of 8+ years' experience in the life insurance/reinsurance industry.
  • 3+ years of experience managing and mentoring actuarial staff.
  • Ability to negotiate and influence winning outcomes.
  • Exposure to pricing/valuation, financial reporting, enterprise risk management, including affiliated and third-party structured reinsurance.
  • Strong individual life insurance pricing and product knowledge, including traditional risk transfer reinsurance.
  • Experience with the Canadian life insurance regulatory capital framework (LICAT), EIOPA Solvency II, Singapore RBC2, Hong Kong RBC, US RBC.
  • Self-motivated and able to determine what needs to be done, generates innovative solutions and makes decisions.
  • Manages complexity and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience using Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate well with all stakeholders whilst building credibility and trust.
  • Strong organizational skills with a commitment to meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Familiarity with Asian (+high net worth) insurance market an asset.
  • Strategic thinker with a commercial mindset.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate within cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness to work unusual hours from time to time, due to Sun Life offices within other time zones.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
