SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

NRG Energy is seeking an experienced communications professional for the role of Senior Communications Specialist to support NRG's external communications and media relations team in executing creative public relations (PR) campaigns for its Home Energy brands. The successful candidate will create written communications including press releases, media advisories, talking points and remarks as well as support development of communication plans and advise on media strategy, public engagement and thought leadership.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of 5 years of related PR or external communications experience, either agency or in-house
  • BS/BA in Communications, Journalism, PR, English or a related field
  • Spanish fluency is a plus

Required Skills/Experience

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills with lens for consumer/social media with a friendly tone and style
  • Proven ability in developing media strategy, key messages and general writing and editing
  • Well-developed and well-maintained media relationships, including media placements and effective measurement of results
  • Strong understanding of PR planning and implementation process
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with an innate ability to simultaneously support multiple projects for multiple clients
  • Strong research and analytical skills with an ability to monitor and analyze industry news and trends
  • Having a grasp of energy/electricity or consumer products industries is a plus
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative/team environment
  • Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced and unstructured, deadline-oriented environment
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong internal and external relationships at all levels

JOB DUTIES

  • Integrate closely with internal clients to understand communication needs of the business
  • Provide PR counsel to internal clients to manage expectations and education on a variety of issues and experiences that impact the reputation of NRG and its Home Energy brands
  • Develop communication plan, media storylines and various media materials including press releases, media advisories, talking points, pitches and supporting materials
  • Collaborate with third parties to develop plans for proactive media announcements, execute proactive PR plans and generate positive news stories
  • Anticipate/recognize potential issues and advise on appropriate courses of action to mitigate negative news stories
  • Interact with media and serve as media spokesperson when needed; brief subject matter experts who speak with the news media
  • Review and manage work of external agencies when needed
  • Manage the review and approval of press releases and collateral materials
  • Track and analyze media coverage, recommend response as needed
