Mott MacDonald is looking for a senior estimator to be based in an east coast office to assist the East Unit of Mott MacDonald, and in some cases also the larger North American Region, in the development and updating of conceptual and definitive cost estimates for heavy civil/infrastructure projects as required.

This will include the following specific duties:



  • Provide conceptual or definitive construction cost estimates as appropriate associated with varying levels of design definition up to and including Issued for Construction (IFC) by performing and / or validating independent takeoffs of project quantities and the application of pricing (direct and indirect costs), escalation, and contingency. Be prepared to defend such estimates or answer questions relative to them.
  • Review and quality check cost estimates prepared by others, including consultants, and support reconciliation efforts.
  • Support the management of cost estimate deliverables by providing recommendations to project teams on timelines, level of effort and final estimate format to meet the project's needs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering design, construction management and contract administration.
  • Prepare detailed and comprehensive written Basis of Estimate documentation to accompany individual estimates.
  • Provide estimating support for value engineering exercises by providing cost estimates for alternative design proposals.
  • As required, participate in risk workshops as the senior representative responsible for preparing the base cost estimate.
  • Support risk mitigation planning by providing conceptual estimates of risk mitigation measures.
  • Prepare independent cost estimates to support change order negotiations as required. Represent the project owner in negotiating fair and reasonable contract change pricing.
  • Work in concert with project managers, engineers / designers, cost engineers, and schedulers to ensure correct problem resolution, and cost / schedule integration as needed.
  • As required, support proposal efforts with the goal of winning new assignments.
  • Perform other estimating-related tasks as required.



The ideal candidate will have the following experience:



  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in engineering, Quantity Surveying, construction management, industrial management, or business. Eight years of experience in construction management work will be considered a substitute for the degree requirement.
  • In addition to the above, have at least 10 years of cost estimating experience in the heavy / civil construction industry.
  • Experience with estimating on awide variety of infrastructure projects, such as transit, highways, ports and marine, tunnels, dams, water, gas pipelines, etc.
  • Have advanced experience in the use of cost estimating software, above and beyond the use of spreadsheets, for example HCSS HeavyBid or Sage Estimating.
  • Experience with bottoms up estimating using typical production rates, labor, equipment and material breakdowns.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Be experienced in developing estimates at various levels of design definition, from conceptual through final design.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Included in the 10 years of required experience, also have at least 2 years' experience in rail transit systems estimating.
  • Experience working for construction contractors and / or construction management firms.
