Job Description

Located in Kent Washington, Protective Coatings Inc. is a leading provider of full service finishing for the aerospace, electronics and medical industries in both commercial and defense applications. Services include but are not limited to non-destructive testing such as fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle inspection and a wide variety of surface enhancement processes such as shot peening and abrasive blasting, passivation, cadmium and nickel zinc plating, chromic, sulfuric and boric sulfuric acid anodizing and the application of chromate conversion coating on ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. Organic coating includes the application and testing of multiple resin systems such as epoxies, phenolics, polyurethanes, polyesters, elastomerics, intumescents, lacquers, alkyds, acrylics, dry-film lubricants, powder coatings and Teflon. Current approvals include the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program, (NADCAP), Boeing Commercial Aircraft Company, Boeing Defense and Space, Boeing/Philadelphia, Boeing Long Beach, Grumman, Gulfstream, Lockheed Martin, Goodrich, Bombardier, Cessna and Sikorsky among much else.

Founded in 1976, Protective Coatings Inc. was later acquired by Precision Castparts in 2012 and became part of the Aerostructures Division. As a defense contractor Protective Coatings Inc. is registered with the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls as a subsidiary of Precision Castparts Corp and is fully compliant with all relevant facets of the International Traffic in Arms Regulations and the Export Administration Regulations.

Position Summary:

Involvement in proposed process analysis and approval, current process analysis and preventive/corrective action, process revision analysis and approval as well as product discrepancy documentation and the customer interaction associated with the implementation of internal/customer driven corrective action. The quality supervisor performs a wide variety of tasks. Some may perform highly specialized activities frequently and other duties infrequently or never.

Reporting Relationships:

The Quality Supervisor will report to the Quality Manager.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to all PCI safety and work rules as dictated in the employee manual
  • Develops, reviews, approves, initiates and implements standards and methods for inspection, testing, and product evaluation before release into the ProCoat System Document Center
  • Reviews, oversees, plans, and conducts the analysis, inspection, design, test, and/or integration to assure the quality of the assigned process
  • Develops, reviews, and approves procedures, forms, and instructions within the QMS
  • Establishes programs to evaluate precision and accuracy of production and Quality Control processes, measurement, and analyzes equipment and facilities used for process verification
  • Oversees the documentation of data obtained during all quality activities consistent with company policies and procedures
  • Communicates to appropriate personnel and management significant issues or developments identified during quality activities and provides recommended process improvements to management
  • Prepares and presents technical and program information to team members and management
  • Establish working relationships with Manufacturing, Engineering, Production Control, Marketing, and Purchasing to maintain quality throughout the ordering and manufacturing cycle and to minimize the potential for non-conforming parts.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of government and industry regulatory (NADCAP, AS9100 etc.) quality codes and standards
  • Provides interpretive support of customer drawings, specifications and regulations assuring that process operators have clear understanding of appropriate customer requirements
  • Communicates with customer(s) concerning Quality issues/matters including but not limited to process performance, process failures, NOE's to customer etc.
  • Clean, organize and maintain work area as prescribed by manager
  • Directly supervises employees. Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations' policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
  • Interviewing new employee candidates and making recommendations for hire
  • Assuring that appropriate training is scheduled and performed,
  • Appraising performance of direct reports, rewarding and disciplining employees, and addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Supervises, directs, and supports the following, as instructed by QA Manager:
    • Quality Engineers engaged in quality activities such as:
      • Document Control, Acceptance Authority Media, and Spec. Reviews
      • Calibration / Control of Monitoring and Measuring Equipment
      • Audits: Internal (QMS and Process) and External (Prime, Customer and regulatory)
      • Corrective Action Preventive Actions (CAPA) Process: 5 Why, Root Cause Analysis
      • Nonconforming product (Internal and External)
      • Maintenance of the Quality Management System
    • Lab Technicians engaged in lab activities such as:
      • Process control testing
      • Solution analysis
      • reviews
      • Maintenance of the Lab
    • Quality Inspectors engaged in quality activities such as:
      • Inspection (Receiving, In-process, and Final)
      • Bakes (Stress relief, Hydrogen embrittlement, and Cures)
      • Process Control Testing
      • Certificate of Conformance
    • Data Entry operators engaged in the following activities:
      • Certificate of Conformance (typing & corrections)
    • Scanning operators engaged in the following activities:
      • Scanning quality records (travelers, process documents, quote cards, material certs, etc.)
      • Cert corrections
    • Plans and monitors the flow of work through Quality Assurance and the Lab.
    • Establishes or adjusts department schedules, hours etc. to assure that customer production schedules are met
    • Formulates and maintains quality assurance objectives and coordinates objectives with production procedures in cooperation with shop supervisors to maximize product reliability and minimize costs
    • Maintains inspection data and prepares list of defects, interacts with other departments to ensure compliance with specification and to facilitate the acceptance of parts.
    • Perform other duties as necessary or appropriate to the position.

Required Skills:

  • Excellent working knowledge of the following:
    • Quality Control and Quality Assurance: Understanding of a QMS is critical
    • Chemistry: Understanding of metal finishing, specifically plating processes, such as cadmium, zinc nickel, copper, and anodize is critical
    • Quality systems, process control, statistical analysis, specifications, and manufacturing safety practices
    • Personal computers and standard office software (such as MS Word, MS Excel, E-mail, MS Office, and Internet) with ability to develop and maintain spreadsheets, reports, and presentations
    • Aerospace industry (manufacturing/processing environment)
    • Products, metal finishing, and non-destructive testing processes
  • Multi-task in demanding environment, manage multiple tasks and changing priorities using strong organization and prioritization skills
  • Quickly understand concepts and think through viable solutions and implications
  • Read and interpret quality and specification data with an understanding of company policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, colleagues, and customers
  • Read, analyze, and interpret documents such as drawings, blueprints, and production schedules
  • Work with mathematical concepts such as basic math, geometry, and trigonometry
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting/critical thinking, and problem solving skills with an emphasis on attention to detail balanced with a big picture focus and ability to work cooperatively with others. Collects and researches data, designs workflows, and procedures

  • Familiarity with working with hazardous materials and utilizing appropriate PPE.

Required Experience:

  • 3+ years supervisory experience, aerospace industry preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in quality control and/or quality assurance in a processing and/or manufacturing environment.
  • Black or Green Belt Six Sigma Certification is a plus

Level of Education

  • 4-year degree in Business Administration or Manufacturing Engineering is preferred.

For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $88700 to $133100 US Dollar (USD) Salaried based on a variety of factors. For informational purposes only, this role is eligible to participate in the Company's Quarterly Cash Bonus Plan, paid out at the quarterly bonus factor of 2X the Company's bonus multiple, based on the Company's performance in the applicable quarter . Employees will receive 120 hours paid time off every year. Employees will also receive 10 paid holidays. Employees (and their families) are eligible to participate in the company's medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. Employees are eligible to enroll in the Company's 401(k) plan.
This position requires use of information or access to production processes subject to national security controls under U.S. export control laws and regulations (including, but not limited to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR)).
