The Position The City of Carlsbad, Library & Cultural Arts Department is hiring one Gallery Attendant. The Gallery Attendant will work in the William D. Cannon Art Gallery, on the campus of the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane. You will work closely with the public to greet and deliver excellent customer service to all gallery visitors. Schedule work hours will include evening and weekend events. Hours per week will vary, with total number of hours not to exceed 20 hours per week. Key Responsibilities

- Open, close gallery according to schedule
- Greet visitors to the gallery, offer information, answer questions
- Familiarity with exhibition
- Ability to approach guests and share information
- Uphold established department policies, procedures and rules of conduct
- Exercise sound judgement and work independently
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Respond to inquiries from public, city staff, artists and partners via telephone, email, written correspondence and in person
- Event and program assistance; logistics, planning, ordering supplies, and working at the events and programs, as needed
- Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects and demonstrate effective time management and organization skills
- Initiative and self-starter skills are essential
- Assist with research related to exhibits
- Assist Cultural Arts staff with additional assignments as needed

Qualifications

- Ability to work under limited supervision
- Strong customer service experience
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to maintain a flexible and positive attitude when working with members of the public
- Must be able to work a consistent schedule, with occasional evenings or weekend special events
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite

Experience & Education

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would qualify.
- Experience working in a gallery or performing arts venue preferred
- Education or coursework in visual or performing arts preferred
Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this class, an employee is regularly required to sit, walk and stand. While performing the duties, employees of this class are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; observe and interpret people and situations; learn and apply new information or skills; and interact with staff and others encountered in the course of work. Physical requirements include safely handling up to 40 pounds; for example, to set up and breakdown tables and chairs for an event.
