Job Description

The University of Missouri is advancing research capabilities in the state, adding access to cloud-based quantum computing resources (as an IBM Quantum Innovation Center) in addition to the robust High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster resources already available. The Technical Lead for HPC and Quantum Services will be responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of HPC and quantum computing services within the academic institution.

The Technical lead will:

-Lead the teams that manage and support the deployment, operation, and integration of HPC systems and support operations and integrations with cloud-based quantum computing systems, ensuring high availability and performance.

-Oversee personnel engaged in research facilitation and direct user support for advanced systems.

-Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and IT staff to identify needs and develop solutions that enhance research capabilities.

-Collaborate with peers at other University of Missouri System campuses and external universities.

-Stay abreast of advancements in quantum computing and HPC technologies to drive innovation and maintain the institution's competitive edge.

-Provide technical expertise and guidance in the acquisition of new quantum computing services and HPC hardware and software.

-Represent the institution at conferences, workshops, and other events to share knowledge and learn from peers in the field.

Shift

Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm with some flexibility; some weekends/after hours work as necessary for effective system support

Minimum Qualifications

This role requires a foundational understanding of quantum computing technologies, HPC infrastructure, and the academic research landscape. A successful candidate will be highly proficient in at least one area, HPC or quantum computing, and familiar with the other, such that (in partnership with vendor resources and/or mentors) they will develop proficiency in the other.

-A bachelor's degree in a major relating to technology, technology management, computer science, physics, or similar subjects (or equivalent experience) is required.

-Working knowledge of or proven capability to quickly learn programming language(s), operating systems, access techniques, research workflows, virtual system administration, and emerging technologies.

-Understanding of and ability to support requirements for compliance with data security and privacy regulations relevant to quantum computing and HPC operations in academic research as well as more restrictive contexts.

-Demonstrated ability to research, quickly identify and correct problems (debug) using system utilities / diagnostics.

-Familiarity with systems analysis procedures and techniques.

-Evening, weekend and call-in work may be required to meet deadlines and correct system failures.

-Ability to work under pressure; meet deadlines; deal with difficult individuals while maintaining composure.

This position can be fulfilled as on-premises or hybrid, typically with 1-2 days on-site per week. Transport to/from campus is not compensated.

Preferred Qualifications

Three years of HPC system administration or two years of experience with quantum computing technical administration. Two or more years leading a technical team.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $65,000 - $125,000 Commensurate with experience
