Defense Test Engineer

Location: Monroe/NC

Department: Industrial Engineering

Shift: 1st

Position Summary:

The Test Engineer is responsible for designing, conducting, and analyzing tests to validate new and existing equipment. The role involves collecting, analyzing, and presenting test data in a clear format to draw informed conclusions. The Test Engineer will provide directions to designers and technicians in proper test design and operation, using the industry's best practices to ensure test success and safety

Key Responsibilities:


  1. Design & Execution test:

  • Work with cross-functional teams (sales, engineering, marketing, manufacturing) to define goals of tests for positive displacement screw-type pumps.
  • Develop tests agendas, procedures, and/or standard work that demonstrate compliance to internal or customer objectives and industry standards for positive displacement screw-type pumps.
  • Design and implement tests to meet customer or internal goals, ensuring that testing is performed safely and effectively.
  • Provide upfront budgetary quotes for the cost of a test to sales leveraging ERP system information.
  • Ensure that all necessary test equipment is ordered, available, and within calibration by the cross-functional team's need-date.
  • Prioritize tests with feedback from involved stakeholders, including identifying areas of possible efficiency gains.


  • Data Collection & Analysis:

    • Collect, log, and process test data to provide test reports in accordance customer deliverable requirements and industry standards. (e.g. ANSI / HI 3.6, MIL-STD-1474, MIL-STD-740-2)
    • Analyze test data using statistical methods, ensuring the accuracy of conclusions and removing uncertainties.
    • Present data in a clear, understandable format and identify key areas of concern.
    • Provide actionable recommendations to operations, engineering, sales, and marketing teams based on findings.
    • Leverage LEAN practices to assist cross-functional teams in trouble-shooting sessions to help determine root causes of test failures. This may come in the form of a D.O.E. test matrix or similar to help identify areas for improvement.


  • Test Equipment & Calibration:

    • Maintain calibration records and track calibrations to maximize test stand usage.
    • Provide documentation of test specifications and recommend new test equipment as necessary.
    • Ensure test setups are correct, and that necessary equipment is available.


  • Continuous Improvement & Policy Adherence:

    • Utilize techniques like DOE, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and Reliability Analysis to optimize testing processes.
    • Strive to minimize test setup and testing times by eliminating unnecessary waste.
    • Participate in the development and review of engineering policies, recommending improvements when needed.
    • Maintain a database of testing results and performance knowledge for future references.


  • Team Collaboration & Leadership:

    • Collaborate across functional teams on complex technical projects, often leading project teams.
    • Develop strong consensus-building skills, influencing others positively in a team environment.
    • Prepare and present technical reports as required.


  • Technical & Professional Development:

    • Stay current with emerging technologies and maintain awareness of industry standards regarding sound, vibration, and sensor technology.
    • Provide technical training and advanced engineering support to technicians and engineers.
    • Actively participate in courses, seminars, conferences, and user groups to enhance professional development.


  • Sound & Vibration Testing:

    • A background in sound and vibration analysis (NVH testing) is essential.
    • Experience with Bruel & Kjaer sound equipment is a plus.
    • Understand and apply noise and vibration testing methodologies in various projects.

    Required Skills & Abilities:


    • Strong knowledge of Excel and Office software for data analysis and documentation.
    • Ability to manage test equipment and maintain its proper functioning.
    • Experience in test design, statistical analysis, and failure analysis.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams and communicate complex technical information.
    • Strong understanding of Lean principles such as Six Sigma, Kaizen, and other optimization techniques.
    • Ability to present findings clearly, both in written and verbal formats.
    • Knowledge of sound and vibration testing, with an emphasis on NVH.


    Job Requirements:

    Education & Experience:


    • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, acoustic engineering, or acoustics concentrations required.
    • 3-5 years of experience with mechanical and hydraulic systems or related engineering experience.
    • Experience in testing, validation, and analysis of mechanical systems and components.
    • Knowledge of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) testing methods and equipment is a plus.

    Additional Requirements:


    • Ability to travel up to 10% domestically and internationally.
    • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities effectively.
    • Ability to obtain a U.S.
      DoD.
      Confidential Security Clearance.
