GIS Specialist/Supervisor - Transportation

Location: Any DEA office in Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Oregon, Utah, or California
Work Model: Hybrid-friendly schedule

Job Overview:
DEA is seeking a Mid/Senior-level GIS Specialist/Supervisor to support projects within our Transportation Business Unit. This role includes direct supervision of a junior-level GIS specialist based in our Boise, Idaho office. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and brings a strong background in GIS/geospatial analysis, relational databases, and spatial data visualization, with the ability to apply this expertise in support of transportation, land use, and environmental planning initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform a range of GIS/geospatial tasks including mapping, cartography, data collection, spatial analysis, raster processing, and CAD-GIS integration workflows.
  • Prepare and transmit GIS data, maps, and tabular outputs to clients, subconsultants, and internal teams.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to Transportation Business Unit staff on GIS tools and systems.
  • Conduct research and analysis to support transportation, land use, and environmental planning projects.
  • Contribute to technical writing for land use, transportation, and transit-related projects.
  • Support the preparation of permitting application packages for engineering projects in coordination with planners.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with ESRI-based GIS tools including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Desktop, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, and ArcGIS Online.
  • Experience applying GIS techniques in structured workflows and production environments.
  • Knowledge of spatial data creation, relational databases, and the design of geospatial deliverables.
  • Strong cartographic skills and ability to produce visually effective map products.
  • Familiarity with planning principles, including transportation and transit corridor planning, NEPA processes, and socio-economic data analysis.
  • Excellent written communication skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, Planning, Environmental Science, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 7-10+ years of professional GIS experience preferred.
  • Completion of an accredited GIS certificate program may substitute for one year of experience.
  • A Master's degree in Planning with a GIS focus may substitute for relevant experience.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Prior supervisory experience, including workload management and mentorship of junior staff.
  • Experience using ArcGIS Model Builder and web-based GIS tools (e.g., AGOL, JavaScript, Microsoft Silverlight).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD (Civil 3D), Bentley MicroStation, and SketchUp.
  • Exposure to travel demand modeling and transportation/traffic impact analysis.
  • Experience working with enterprise GIS environments (e.g., ArcGIS for Server).
  • Programming or scripting skills in Python or other languages are a plus.
