Description

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

School of Medicine | Department of Biomedical Informatics

Job Title: Information Sciences Professional

Position: #00818059 - Requisition: #36635

Job Summary:

The Cole Lab in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking a computational research analyst with research experience and a background in computational biology, applied biostatistics, human genomics, or related fields.

This position will be responsible for conducting large-scale statistical genetic analysis on both simulated and real-world data in hundreds of thousands of individuals on a local server. This position must have some research experience, a basic understanding of biology with at least one genetics course and be proficient in R and bash.

This position will lead a project that uses genetic heritability as a tool to improve phenotype pre-processing decisions. Future projects in the lab will be of similar nature. While training in genetics is provided by the Cole Lab, we want this person to come in with a strong foundation in statistics (including experience with simulating data) and coding.

We are a group of hybrid (in-person and remote) researchers expected to be on campus at least part-time with the potential for flexibility as needed and in agreement with the PI.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Simulate phenotypes with varying distributions, outliers, and confounding that have differing levels of heritability (some of this can be taught, but the initial project relies on the ability to execute this task).
  • Write custom scripts to access and analyze data. This includes but is not limited to statistical genetic analysis (GWAS and heritability) using genetic software and bash commands on local and cloud servers.
  • Develop reproducible code and complex analysis and visualization pipelines with good documentation.
  • Assist with the design and development of additional statistical genetics and bioinformatics-related projects in the lab.
  • Contribute to mentorship and training, developing educational materials and guiding lab members on statistical genetics and computational methods.
  • Prepare and present scientific findings at lab meetings, seminars, and national/international conferences.
  • Write and contribute to scientific abstracts, manuscripts, and grant proposals.

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 2-3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.
