Position description
The Hussain laboratory at UCI is recruiting a research specialist to assist leading and co-managing a research laboratory focused on metabolic disease (diabetes, obesity, metabolic liver disease). The position requires knowledge, expertise and willingness to engage in in daily work in the laboratory as well as in the animal colony as needed to advance ongoing and newly initiated work. The position will require outstanding organizational skills to plan, coordinate with research staff as well as with collaborating laboratories. The position will require assistance in evaluating and managing performance of individual laboratory staff. The position also requires assistance in compiling and interpreting laboratory data, writing scientific manuscripts and research grant applications. The following are required: -CV

- Appointees to the Full rank should possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization. Specialists at full rank are normally expected to have a significant record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field, professional recognition in the field, and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service.
Additional Qualifications:
Willingness and ability to conduct research studies independently, as a team member as well as in a supervisory capacity. Willingness and ability to administer and maintain mouse colony, conduct physiologic metabolic studies in mice and gather and compile research data. Willingness and ability to conduct bench based research based on molecular, biochemical and cellbiological assays to gather and compile research data. Willingness and ability to participate in laboratory meetings, collaborations and coordination with other laboratories and work as a collaborative team member but also be able to advance research oriented work individually as required Past experience in running or co-running, organizing and managing a research laboratory including supervising trainees. Willingness and ability to plan and coordinate the activities of laboratory personnel and team to advance research activities. Willingness and ability to participate in evaluating and providing written performance evaluations to trainees and staff (postdoctoral fellows, students, research assistants) and make recommendations for advancement. Demonstrated to supervise, train and evaluate trainees and laboratory employees in mouse husbandry, genotyping, mouse colony management, molecular and biochemical bench based techniques, histological and microscopical techniques, cell biological work. Expertise in pancreas development, metabolism, metabolic disease and/or liver or islet biology Several years of experience in using molecular and cellular techniques, maintaining a colony of genetically modified mouse models, cell based assays, histological and microscopic techniques and Demonstrated ability to reliably establish and trouble-shoot existing and new protocols based on modern molecular techniques Demonstrated ability to write or co-write grant applications and scientific publications Outstanding Organizational Skills Outstanding Interpersonal Communication Skills Willingness and ability to keep laboratory supplies, reagents and inventory up to date, plan procurement of reagents as needed, communicate and coordinate with vendors for quotes, repair services and maintenance services. Willingness and ability to assist in writing, submitting and maintaining IACUC protocols. Willingness and ability to communicate and coordinate with animal colony administration and staff regarding all aspects of mouse colony maintenance Willingness and ability to communicate and co-ordinate with facilities management for repairs and maintenance Willingness and ability to communicate and coordinate with EHS for environmental and health safety requirements and tracking and keeping EHS training of laboratory members updated.
Preferred Qualifications:
Proficiency in small animal anesthesia and survival surgical techniques. Willingness to learn small animal anesthesia and survival surgery Proficiency in coding languages such as R and/or Python Several years of experience in administering a discovery-research oriented basic science laboratory including working with genetically modified mouse models, bench based molecular work as well as compiling research data for publications and grant applications.
Positions are dependent upon extramural funding. Initial appointments are for one year and renewal is based on availability of support Applications will be considered until positions are filled.
