Senior/ Principal AI-Bioinformatics Scientist

Genentech
United States, California, South San Francisco
Apr 17, 2025
The Position

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

The department of Translational safety is looking for an AI/Bioinformatics data scientist to provide scientific leadership and contribute to the comprehensive and integrated safety profiling of Genentech drug candidates. A successful candidate will work closely with stakeholders across the company to analyze diverse data and develop novel computational tools that support safety-related decisions. AI and bioinformatics scientists in Translational Safety integrate state-of-the-art analytical methods to support molecular design, data interpretation, and in vitro or in silico model development for strategic data generation as well as to support mechanism of toxicity investigations. Our scientists continuously look for opportunities to advance drug development and improve patient care though integration of computational methods in drug development.

The Opportunity:

As an integral member of this dynamic team, you will be:

  • Analyzing data including transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and other assay assays to support target safety assessment, in vitro assay development, and safety-related decision for new drug candidates

  • Analyzing large scale single cell data sets in support of in vitro assay development and mechanistic investigations
  • Analyzing historical data to develop predictive AI models aimed at de-risking drug candidates throughout the Genentech pipeline and support lab-in-a-loop molecular design and evaluation cycle

  • Identifying, evaluating, andproposing novel approaches for safety AI predictions to empower decision making throughout the drug-development pipelines

  • Extracting and curating, structured and unstructured, in vitro and in vivo data to augment and improve predictive models for safety-related endpoints

  • Working with cross-functional teams including toxicologists, biologists, chemists, data scientists, and other stakeholders to integrate machine learning solutions into decision-making throughout drug-development pipelines

  • Collaborating with computational scientists and software engineering teams across theorganization to drive the deployment and utilization of novel computation methods and tools for de-risking pipeline molecules

  • Actively engaging with academic groups at the forefront of AI/ML, toxicology, and informatic fields

  • Publishing high quality impactful scientific articles and present at conferences, business meetings, and academic institutions

Qualifications

  • PhD in computational biology, computational toxicology, computational chemistry, biomedical data science, statistics, machine learning, biotechnology, or a related field with 0-3 years of experience (Senior Scientist) and 3+ years (Principal Scientist)

  • In depth understanding of modern omics data and analytical pipelines, with specific emphasis on single cell and special transcriptomics data

  • Experience with metabolomics and proteomics is preferred

  • A passion for innovation and a commitment to improving healthcare outcomes through cutting-edge technology

  • Past record of integrating data across sources to answer complex questions

  • Strong programming skills in one or more languages commonly used for large-scale data management and machine learning, such as R or Python

  • A clear understanding of contemporary machine learning concepts and demonstrated interest in applying machine learning methods to problems in life sciences

  • Hands on experience in developing, deploying, and integrating machine learning models in cross-functional teams and science-focused environments

  • Experience with database architecture, cloud computing, and containerization

  • Practical understanding of data processing, inference, and statistics to address evolving scientific questions and inform scientific decisions

  • Previous experience with Large Language Models (LLM), knowledge graphs, generative models, and agent-based modeling is strongly preferred

  • Understanding of cheminformatics, computerized structure processing tools, and related tools (e.g. RDKit, OEChem) is preferred

  • Strong communication and collaborative skills with both biology-focused and computation-focused colleagues

  • Knowledge of human genetics and genomics is preferred

  • Demonstrated track record of hands-on technical leadership and scientific contributions such as papers or conference communications.
