COMMANDER (Safety) CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT Office of the Fire Commissioner/Safety Division Number of Positions: 1 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval) Starting Salary: $109,536 annually Applications for this position will be accepted until 11:59pm CDT on 05/02/2025 THIS POSITION IS OPEN ONLY TO CAREER SERVICE UNIFORMED MEMBERS OF THE CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT Under direction, the class functions as a uniformed technical specialist performing a variety of high-level administrative and operational functions to assist in the management of a major division or bureau within the Chicago Fire Department and performs related duties as required. ESSENTIAL DUTIES * Coordinates, directs, and ensures the enforcement of continuous safety operation compliance according to the Illinois Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IL-OSHA) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards throughout the department, spanning all divisions and ranks * Proactively assess fire ground and/or training operations to identify imminent or potential hazards, with the authority to cease operations * Mitigates potential safety risks by assessing training, implementing preventive policy, developing new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and tactics, and prioritizing initiatives from After Action Reports (AARs) * Recommends new strategies and initiatives to proactively address future occupational hazards * Provides continuous support in the field with all uniform personnel conducting operations to work to decrease accidents and injuries * Responds to fires, emergency medical services, other hazardous situations, and large-scale events as assigned to ensure uniformed employees are in compliance with general orders and directives as issued by the department * Serves as an intermediary between uniformed field personnel, bureau heads, and department management in the resolution of problems and complaints * Explains and enforces department and City policies and procedures, general orders, and the collective bargaining agreement * Tracks and monitors budget allocations and expenditures, and participates in the preparation of grant applications * Conducts research and prepares reports for management regarding best practices, new technologies and developments in occupational safety * Prepares management reports relating to after action reviews, emergency operations planning, preparedness, and grant management activities * Serves as an authority in the development and execution of overviews and incident action plans for special events and other pre-planned situations * Functions as assigned within the incident management team (IMT) for special events and/or planned gatherings * Represents the Chicago Fire Department at local, state, and federal task forces, conferences and planning meetings * Responsible for maintaining the chain of command and giving direct orders to members, as required
