JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for a Cyber Security Systems Engineer to join our Cyber and Information Security Division at the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). In this role, you will be part of our cybersecurity SOC and Blue team that provides both proactive and reactive computer and network defense to ARL's networks and systems.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Proactively monitor ARL networks and systems to identify and remediate risks and threats and provide a timely response to all cybersecurity incidents

  • Respond to alerts, tickets, tasks, user activity, requests, and events generated by multiple security systems, IT teams, or units within the ARL environment

  • Apply system and network security principles, with particular emphasis on NIST security guidelines, to better the execution of preemption or detection and response to cyber security threats at ARL

  • Implement security policy and configuration within cyber security toolsets

Additional responsibilities for higher level position include:

  • Lead threat hunting initiatives to proactively identify risks

  • Perform system and security engineering including coordinating, designing, recommending, evaluating, and managing new and existing security services, controls, solutions, processes, and procedures

  • Report to senior leadership and key stakeholders regarding investigative findings and incident response

This position can be filled at multiple levels, depending on your education and experience. Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's Degree or higher, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Additional experience and/or education are required for higher level positions.

Required skills and experience areas include:

  • Windows and Linux operating systems expertise

  • Cyber security, system administration, and networking fundamentals

  • Various security toolsets such as SIEM, Firewall, XDR/EDR, IDS/IPS, FIM, CASB, Forensic toolkits, etc.

  • System administration and networking toolsets such as VPN, NAC, DNS, DHCP, pcap/packet sniffers, process monitoring, virtualization, containerization, etc.

  • Incident response and threat hunting

  • Cyber security certification(s) such as Security+ or CISSP

  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required

  • Ability to successfully present to leadership, key stakeholders, and others in order to provide understanding, specifically technical data, to technical and non-technical audiences

Preferred Skills and experience areas include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology or Cybersecurity

  • Additional cyber security certification(s) such as GCIA, GCIH, OSCP, CEH, etc.

  • Automation/scripting language experience such as Python, Powershell, bash, etc.

  • ACAS/Tenable

  • Malware analysis

  • Computer and/or Network Forensic

  • Data loss prevention and insider risk investigation

  • Cloud vendors and products

Your working location can be hybrid on-site/work from home, located in State College, PA.

**The proposed salary range may be impacted by geographic differential.**

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$61,800.00 - $102,300.00
