This Position reports to:

Research Team Manager - San Jose

ABB's Process Automation business area enables customers to operate some of the world's largest and most complex industrial infrastructures, helping them outrun - leaner and cleaner.
We offer a broad range of automation, electrification and digital solutions for process, hybrid and maritime industries, including industry-specific integrated control and software as well as measurement and analytics solutions and services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate in a team to develop novel solutions to improve the performance and expand the application space of ABB instruments.
  • Utilize hardware, software, and data analysis skills to develop, fabricate, and test new analyzers based on cavity enhanced, tunable diode laser absorption spectrometry and other laser diagnostic techniques.
  • Design and perform experiments needed to qualify applications of new and current products.
  • Work with academic, national laboratory, industrial, and other research collaborators to apply laser-based analyzers to a wide array of environmental, industrial, medical, and military applications.
  • Document analyzer configurations, test protocols, and results to drive the release of new products to production.

Qualifications

  • PhD in applied physics, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, optics or a related experimental field is preferred. M.S. may be considered with extensive experience and proven track record.
  • Familiarity with optical spectroscopy (e.g., absorption, FTIR, photoacoustic, Raman, fluorescence, LIBS, etc.) and spectral interpretation.
  • Background in molecular vibration and electronic transition spectroscopy using full spectra information for complex qualitative and quantitative chemical characterization of various mixtures.
  • Hands-on experience in using lasers (UV, NIR, MIR) in a laboratory setting and handling gas samples.
  • Understanding of statistical methods applied to both experimental design optimization and experimental data analysis, including but not limited to univariate statistical analysis, multivariate statistical analysis, and iterative fitting techniques.
  • Proven problem-solving skills to identify and troubleshoot unforeseen problems in a systematic, scientific method without direct instruction.
  • Ability to develop, implement and launch initiatives related to product changes, new products, and new applications.
  • Familiarity with scientific data analysis tools, such as: MATLAB, PLS, PCR, IGOR Pro, Horizon, Origin, LabVIEW, Python, etc. and/or spectroscopy analysis software, such as: Unscrambler / CAMO, PLS Toolbox, Horizon, Pirouette, Statistica, SIMCA, saisir, or GRAMS A/I.
