Job Summary

The Early College Program consists of high school students participating in Achieving a College Education (ACE) (designed to help first-generation, financially disadvantaged college-bound students succeed) and Hoop of Learning (HOL) (high school-to-college bridge program for Native American high school students.) Both programs allow students to earn college credits while still attending high school. The Student Services Specialist will assist the Early College Program at GCC by providing direct student service delivery, as well as problem resolution, and technical assistance. This position will support the college's strategic enrollment initiatives by serving as an Early College Programs community liaison providing outreach services to high schools, community agencies, and organizations to promote the enrollment/retention of students enrolled in Early College opportunities at GCC. This position will assist with the evaluation of criteria used for program eligibility, researching program activities and recommending enhancements, and developing and implementing programming (workshops) and events to support student development and student success. As a representative of the institution, this position will work closely with internal and external constituents and utilizes a broad base of knowledge of student service functions to support Early College students in understanding and navigating the admissions and enrollment processes at GCC along with supporting college retention.

Essential Functions

30% - Performs a variety of student services functions for programs to support the Early College Programs Department at GCC by providing student support to current student by monitoring their progress, academic planning/advising and orientation to enhance student success with continuing Early College students in all aspects of student services including recruitment, placement testing, academic planning, registration, financial aid, orientation programming and retention activities; advises students regarding degree options, transfer options, academic success and financial planning; maintains a cohort of students for advising purposes; monitors and tracks student progress through completion; maintains records, assists with student persistence and completion efforts, identify resources needed to address students' circumstances and potential barriers, assesses and identifies students' needs and refers more complicated cases to the next level; meets and corresponds with students and/or parents/guardians communicates by having in person or virtual meetings or corresponding via email and phone

30% - Assists in coordination and provides monthly in-person workshops for this population that incorporates tools for college success that includes but not limited to: Time Management, Overcome Procrastination, Staying Motivated, Canvas 101, Library Resources, FAFSA Prep, Civic Engagement and general advising

20% - Assists with and presents campus outreach and retention-based events for potential Early College students by maintaining accurate records, assisting students with follow-up activities, responding to prospective student inquiries; abide by and explains federal, state, district and/or local policies; provides information to students, parents and other stakeholders and assisting with and presenting at New Student Orientation

15% - Maintains and updates websites, maintains electronic database information and reporting systems, monitors program budget and expenditures, plans and assists with special events (including but not limited to Welcome Back and Senior Recognition Ceremony); prepares, designs and maintains correspondence, reports, presentation and program materials and documentation

5% - Assists with special projects as assigned; other duties as assigned commensurate to grade level of position

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution, and one year full-time of student services or college teaching experience or experience assisting with educational program development and coordination, student advisement, financial aid, customer service, or related student development programs.

OR

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

A. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution

B. One or more years' experiencing developing and/or delivering group presentations

C. One or more years' experience in advising and/or providing student support

D. One or more years' experience in outreach and/or recruitment functions within higher education

E. One or more years' experience using technology to support academic advising, student success, student learning, and/or career advising

F. One or more years' experience with high school student populations in an educational setting

Special Working Conditions
  • Tuesday - Saturday on campus presence, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. during the semester and Monday -Thursday 7 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. during the Summer
  • Travel to local high schools and community partners
  • Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required; must meet minimum standards regarding driving: http://www.maricopa.edu/legal/rmi/vehicle.htm#requirements
  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
  • Will be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations
  • May be required to work evenings
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
