Responsibilities

Summary

The Psychiatrist assumes direct responsibility for the continuity of psychiatric care given to the patients assigned to his/her caseload.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Psychiatrist evaluates all patients referred for presence of mental illness and/or mental health challenges and if applicable follows them in clinic. If prescribed medications seen at a minimum once every three months or based on client requirements or patient needs.
  • Conducts full, comprehensive psychiatric evaluation which includes medical history and obtaining collateral if applicable from other medical and mental health care providers.
  • The Psychiatrist ensures all assessments, initial and follow-ups, include a Mental Status Examination. When applicable utilizes additional assessments such as the Folstein aka Mini-Mental State Examination, Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale. Render accurate diagnoses based on clinical presentation, and collateral information.
  • Manages patient's responses to medication regimen by documenting a timeline of symptoms which could include utilization of scales such as GAD-7, PHQ-9.
  • The Psychiatrist provides a full assessment to address symptoms, information presented and creates a treatment plan that is based on presented illness. Provides 'rule-outs' if applicable. Assessment should also include any presenting social factors influencing presentation, personality traits/disorders, if applicable.
  • Develops a comprehensive treatment plan according to the patient's psychological needs including but not limited to behavioral, emotional, cognitive, social, developmental.
  • The Psychiatrist maintains an optimal therapeutic environment for rehabilitation of those in our care.
  • Provides patient education on recommended treatment plan, including documenting obtained consent to initiate medication and will ensure psychotropic consent forms are signed on an on-going basis.
  • The Psychiatrist will enter all clinical interactions including administrative notations in the electronic medical record, where applicable. If a paper chart is being utilized, notes must be dated, signed with a printed name including credentials. If applicable, type of treatment to be notated.
  • Provides patients with emotional support and strategies to help manage their disorder and emotional intelligence. Advises patients on how to cope with mental diseases and emotional breakdowns.
  • The Psychiatrist educates patients in non-pharmacological modalities to address stress, anxiety, sleep disturbance, sadness including emphasizing the importance of sunlight, being outdoors, regular exercise as tolerated, yoga, stretching, therapeutic breathing, mindfulness, positive thinking, to name a few.
  • Provides emergency psychiatric care. Provide crisis intervention and/or consultation which could be after hours when needed.
  • The Psychiatrist participates in care team by reviewing entries by other medical providers, maintaining consistent communication with behavioral health staff, therapists, and other clinicians as needed. Reminds patients to be compliant with all appointments and stresses the importance of total body and mind wellness.
  • Assists with training for mid-level practitioners, clinical collaboration with psychiatric mid-level practitioners, nursing staff, support services personnel, and peer professional staff as needed.
  • The Psychiatrist keeps up to date with professional job knowledge by consistently reading publications, attending educational conferences, participating in CME. Stays abreast of new developments in psychiatry and mental health.
  • Participates in review of all quality of care provided for provider's patients, including sentinel events.
  • The Psychiatrist performs other duties as assigned, which could include assisting with restraints and seclusion assessments and orders, per client policies and procedures.
  • Provide appropriate instruction to institutional personnel in matters related to mental health.
  • Follow ethical and legal policies, procedures and standards. Utilize accepted clinical practices.
  • Competently utilize EMR where provided.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited medical school with specialty training in psychiatry.
  • Licensed to practice medicine in the state in which the Facility is located.
  • One (1) year of clinical experience.
  • Copy of professional license to remain on file at the Facility where services are rendered at all times.
  • Maintain a current DPS and DEA Certificate of Registration.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
