Responsibilities

Summary:

The Substance Abuse Counselor assists in developing, organizing, and conducting groups to provide education and treatment for conditions and problems relating to drug and alcohol abuse. Learns, uses and models principles of the "What Works" system through evidence-based practices in all interactions with clients and other staff members.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Substance Abuse Counselor facilitates delivery of cognitive behavioral curriculum in a group setting focusing on the areas of motivation for change, social adjustment, personal management, social skills development, cognitive restructuring, and development of problem-solving skills.
  • Conducts a periodic review of curriculum and resources available to enhance a participant's participation in pre-release programs and activities.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor maintains class rosters, attendance records, documentation of progress, and provides completion certificates for LIB, MRT and other curriculum as required.
  • Supports the assessment of participant needs and makes referrals to appropriate staff.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor aids participants in planning and developing post-release plans and encourages them to assume responsibility for post-release behaviors and activities.
  • Participates in orientation of participants regarding all behavioral treatment programs including, but not limited to, LIB and MRT.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor facilitates and/or co-facilitates, group counseling from a structured manual.
  • Participates in weekly incentive events earned by the participants.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor assists in the coordination of participant program schedules to ensure the criminogenic needs of the participants are met.
  • Conducts Quality Assurance reviews assigned by Program Manager.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor assists Program Manager with administrative duties as assigned.
  • Is a resource for other staff regarding current substance abuse issues and trends.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor acts as a point of contact in the absence of the Program Manager.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in any of the social sciences and two (2) years of professional experience in chemical additions counseling; OR
    • An Associate's degree from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of professional experience in chemical addition counseling; OR
    • A High School diploma/GED and six (6) years of professional experience in chemical addictions counseling.
  • A certification (CSAC) in Substance Abuse is required. LCAS or LCAS-A is preferred.
  • Must have at least one (1) year supervisory experience, preferably in a correctional setting.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a lead worker over a lower-level staff.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a team of professionals and have the ability to implement team strategy approaches to work assignments.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
