The George Washington (GW) Histopathology Shared Research Facility supports the GW research community by providing high-quality histology and interpretive pathology services, including tissue processing, sectioning, routine and immunohistochemical staining, slide scanning and interpretive
pathology, as well as services in instrument training and Shared administrative functions.

The Histopathology Shared Facility is a rapidly growing array of equipment resources and tissue pathology expertise, open to all schools and departments of the GW community, as well as to researchers from external academic, industrial, and governmental institutes.

Job Description Summary:
The GW Histopathology Shared Facility is housed within the GW Cancer Center and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences ( SMHS). The Facility Director oversees the operations and management of the histology laboratory and ensures the lab provides services that maintain the highest standards of quality and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate is a certified histotechnologist with expertise in immunohistochemistry ( IHC) and a proven track record in lab management and process improvement. The Facility Director is expected to work with investigators, as necessary, to evaluate histology research methods and to perform procedures and techniques based on established objectives. The manager will oversee project completion as it applies to histology, including the financial management of project funds for established objectives and budget authority. In addition to histology services, the Facility Director is responsible for routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, tracking and reporting operations performance, preparing SOPs, and meeting invoicing and budgetary goals. The Facility Director may oversee students, temporary, or limited-term employees.

Specific responsibilities include:
1. Laboratory Operations:

  • Oversee daily operations of the histology laboratory, ensuring timely and accurate processing of samples.
  • Manage and maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and consumables to ensure optimal functionality and availability.
  • Implement and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) to maintain consistency and quality in laboratory processes.


2. Quality Assurance and Improvement:

  • Develop and oversee quality control programs to ensure accurate and reliable results.
  • Regularly evaluate and update laboratory protocols in line with emerging best practices and technologies.
  • Conduct routine audits to ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.

3. Technical Expertise:

  • Perform and troubleshoot advanced histological and immunohistochemical techniques.
  • Provide technical guidance and training as needed to laboratory staff and research investigators.
  • Stay current with advances in histology and immunohistochemistry, incorporating innovative methods to enhance laboratory services.

4. Administrative and Strategic Leadership:

  • Collaborate with academic administration to align laboratory goals with institutional priorities.
  • Prepare and manage the laboratory budget, including forecasting and cost-control measures.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for lab expansion, equipment upgrades, and new service offerings.

5. Collaboration and Support:

  • Work closely with research investigators to understand their project needs and provide tailored histological support.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that promotes teamwork and knowledge sharing.
  • Serve as a liaison between the lab and external vendors, collaborators, and regulatory agencies.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a BA/BS in a related discipline plus 7 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in a related field is desired.
  • Experience working in an academic or research institution is preferred.
  • Prior experience in a leadership or managerial role within a laboratory setting is desired.
  • Knowledge of digital pathology and image analysis is strongly valued.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and management abilities.

Hiring Range $74,232.46 - $144,894.26
