Job Summary

South Mountain Community College is currently seeking a Library Specialist Supervisor. This position oversees Library Access Services and is responsible for the day-to-day management of circulation, interlibrary loans, reserves, acquisitions, periodicals, and technical services. This role supervises full-time staff and student workers, leading performance evaluations, training, scheduling, and personnel processes within a collaborative team environment. The Supervisor ensures high standards of service by leading quality control and assurance initiatives and fostering a culture of exceptional customer service. Serving as a key liaison with District technical services staff, the position also works closely with library faculty to support and advance library programs and student-centered initiatives. South Mountain Community Library (SMCL), a unique partnership between South Mountain Community College and Phoenix Public Library, serves as a vital community hub, promoting lifelong learning, educational enrichment, and civic engagement.

Essential Functions

40% - Manages full-time staff and student workers by conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training and scheduling, and managing personnel procedures in a collaborative team environment; Hires, trains, and supervises library staff and student workers
15% - Supervises Library Access Services and oversees the daily operations of circulation, inter-library loans, reserves, acquisitions, periodicals, and library technical services
15% - Works collaboratively with the SMCL Co-Managers under the direct supervision of the Division Chair to 1) manage and oversee Library Access Services (circulation, inter-library loans, reserves, acquisitions, periodicals, library technology services), 2) monitor expenditures, equipment and technology of Access Services, and 3) monitor the library facility to ensure a clean and safe environment conducive for studying and learning
10% - Leads and monitors quality control and assurance activities for the area and ensures the provision of excellent customer service, liaises with District technical services staff and participates in leadership with the library faculty in collaborative ways in order to advance library initiatives and student service
10% - Plans, organizes, reviews, and evaluates the work of library staff including daily scheduling, human capital management (HCM) time, and adherence to workplace safety practices, provides input and assists in developing, recommending, and implementing library operating policies, procedures and work standards at the local and district level, serves as a technical staff lead over the Library Integrated System
10% - Compiles and reviews data and prepares routine and ad hoc reports, engages with District wide Library Technical Services initiatives, provides customer service on a regular schedule at the circulation service desks and responds to escalated patron requests and complaints

Minimum Qualifications

Associates Degree from a regionally accredited institution in library science or related field, two (2) years of related library support experience such as oversight of daily operations of circulation, inter-library loans and reserves, acquisitions, periodicals and library technology services and two (2) years of lead work or senior level work experience.

OR

High School Diploma/GED and four (4) years of related library support experience such as oversight of daily operations of circulation, inter-library loans and reserves, acquisitions, periodicals and library technology services and two (2) years of lead work or senior level work experience.

Desired Qualifications

A. Bachelor's degree
B. Supervisory and/or lead work experience
C. Experience providing service for circulation, inter-library loans, reserves, acquisitions, periodicals, and/or library technical services
D. Experience and knowledge in using an Integrated Library System for the purpose of material acquisitions, processing and billing and/or circulation services
E. Customer service experience and/or experience providing service to students in a Library setting
F. Experience compiling and using data to create reports and assess work

Special Working Conditions
  • May be required to travel to other campuses and the District Office for meetings and training
  • Monday - Friday, 9am - 7pm; some evenings and weekends may be required
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
  • May be required to lift or carry up to #25 lbs
