Carnegie Mellon University's department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is seeking a Hacker Fab Lab Manager to join their team. In this role you will administer and coordinate the technical activities of an educational activity in relation to the operation of a laboratory. Acts as an advisor to subordinates to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems. Develops and administers budgets, schedules, and performance requirements. Frequently coordinates the program activities with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and users. Serve as an advisor to faculty to meet schedules and or resolve technical problems. Ensure Standard Operating Procedures and protocols are maintained and applied.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Students in the Hacker Fab will be manipulating and tuning equipment then using it to manufacture simple integrated circuits on 2" silicon wafers. The lab manager and a faculty member will oversee this operation.
  • Administer and coordinate the technical activities, educational programs, and infrastructure related to the operation of the
  • specialized laboratories.
  • Develop and implement Laboratory(s) policies and procedures. Manage and coordinate operational policies and procedures.
  • Maintain quality checks on safety of laboratories, including managing chemical hazards and biohazards and ensure maintenance of the facilities according to Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Plan and schedule work for the users to ensure proper distribution of assignments as well as adequate manning, space, and facilities for subsequent performance of duties. Manages and coordinates the activities of a project(s) with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees.
  • Assure that the laboratory users are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and equipment specific requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical and Mental Components:

  • Requires wide range of mobility, i.e., ability to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach, bend at waist, grasp and pick up objects, maneuver in cramped areas, perform minor repairs to equipment, stand for long periods of time, lift, and carry equipment and other heavy materials up to 50 lbs. up the stairs and pull and push carts up to 150 lbs. University offices, auditoriums, and classrooms. Routine exposure to computer and audio-visual equipment.
  • Adaptability and openness to change as the department and organization evolves.
  • Ability to work well with others and/or as part of a team.
  • Ability to respond to and manage emergency situations and/or crisis.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail; keep and maintain accurate and detailed reports and records.
  • Ability to maintain composure when dealing with difficult situations and/or individuals.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Requires work with hazardous chemicals and compressed gases, including the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Visual acuity to perform activities such as extended use of a computer monitor, extensive reading, transcribing, analyzing data and figures, visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines, using measurement devices, and/or assembly of parts at distances close to the eye.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Research Lab Experience
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered
