Position Purpose
Reporting to the Senior Production Manager, this position is classified as IATSE. This Master Technician position is primarily responsible for providing technical support to meet complex audio and lighting requirements through a master's level of skill in all aspects of the trade. The Hopkins Center presents and produces live arts events of all genres as well as supports College events and functions. This position is a 1 FTE, twelve month position which is regularly scheduled to work at least forty hours per week.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Associate's degree in Technical Theater or the equivalent.
  • Three years of experience in technical production of the performing arts.
  • Proficiency with ETC lighting console programming
  • Employment will be contingent upon possession of a valid U.S. driver's license and continued qualification as an Approved Driver under the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Current technical knowledge of theatrical and concert lighting, carpentry, and video, including applicable software programs.
  • Ability to train and oversee student and Union personnel in lighting, carpentry, and video technologies.
  • Basic knowledge of concert and theatrical sound equipment.
  • Familiarity with procedures for safely transporting a variety of musical equipment.
  • Familiarity with computers and software including Microsoft Office, Google, and other cloud-based platforms.
  • Membership in IATSE required upon hiring.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the techniques and the ability to work with others in a diplomatic, constructive, and collaborative manner
  • Commitment to working effectively as part of an equitable, anti-racist, anti-biased team, and work environment. Related training a plus.
  • Work requires physical activity including frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, standing, and working in cramped or awkward positions.
  • Work involves regular lifting, carrying, and holding objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Role involves exposure to potential hazards as a result from working directly with electricity.
  • This position performs work at high altitudes on ladders, personnel lifts, or on rigging grids.
  • The work involves driving trucks up to 28' in length (non-CDL).
  • This position requires irregular hours, including nights, weekends.
  • Position requirements may also include wearing special or protective clothing, gloves, goggles or masks, and ear plugs.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in technical theatre or equivalent
  • 5 years of experience in technical production for live arts
  • Proficiency with Lightwright, Vectorworks, Adobe Creative Suite software
  • Proficiency with Wireless Workbench, Dante Virtual Soundcard, Logic software
  • Experience with computer networking of theatrical equipment in the live arts environment
  • Experience with online streaming and video production front-end and back-end software and services

Description
Sound/Audio Support
This position is responsible for the design, operation, oversight, and execution of sound system requirements for Hopkins Center rehearsals, performances, and events. This includes various types of sound equipment and tools such as analog and digital mixing consoles, front of house and onstage monitor speaker systems, various types of microphones, wireless frequency coordination, communication systems, multi-track recording systems, Mac and Windows based computers and associated audio software, internal and external dynamics (compressors, gates, limiters) and time based effects (reverb, delay) and equalizers. This role determines sound system layout and cabling, speaker selection, types, and locations of microphones to be used and creates input/output assignment documentation for front of house and monitors.

Lighting Support
This position may design, execute, and participate in all aspects of lighting instrumentation related to lighting designs for events. This includes programming, operating, or overseeing the operation of lighting consoles for rehearsal, performances and events as well as hanging and focusing lighting equipment from heights via personnel lift, ladders, and catwalks. Understands lighting plots and paperwork. Be able to create lighting looks suited to lectures, dance, and theatrical productions.

Video Support
Participates in installation and operation of video projectors, display equipment and cameras. Performs basic video editing tasks to prepare media for live presentation as well as assists in the set-up and operation of PowerPoint and other digital media presentations as components of live performances in addition to assisting in operation and production of virtual and live-streamed events.

Description
Carpentry/Repair/Maintenance and Miscellaneous Support
Participates in the installation and assembly of scenery, staging, and musical instrument setup. Includes operating and supporting others in the safe operation of counterweight fly systems and assigning appropriate loading of weights for flying scenery and electrics. Prepares and performs repair, maintenance, and documentation of audio equipment and assists with maintenance of lighting and stage equipment and developing/revising policies and protocols. Maintains inventory of audio supplies and advises on lighting and stage supplies; advises on needs to replace/purchase. Assists Management on annual inspection of technical systems and components.
This role is responsive to the needs of artist's production representatives, directors, designers, etc. and may coordinate assigned activities backstage for the department's needs during rehearsals and performances. Assists management in assuring the safe use of a variety of potentially dangerous stage equipment and in implementing procedures for safe and efficient audio set-ups, stage lighting, stage set-ups, rigging, and other technical production practices. Assists in loading and unloading of equipment to/from vehicles. Operates rental vehicles for transportation of artists and equipment to remote performance locations.

Description
Training/Coaching/Safety
Provides direction and oversight of student and Union work crews in all aspects of the production process including monitoring the progress of work with delegated departments to ensure that schedules and specifications are met, and supervisors are informed on the status of work. May provide instruction to visiting personnel and other production staff, as requested. Assists management in assuring the safe use of stage equipment and in implementing procedures for safe and efficient technical production practices. The Hop provides timely CPR training/certification for all full-time technicians.
