Uplift
PLUS was established in 2014 with the goal of recruiting high-achieving students to
UNC-Chapel Hill by providing an immersive experience that promotes a sense of belonging and exposes them to student life at Carolina. Rising high school seniors are encouraged to apply.
For two weeks, Uplift
PLUS participants live on campus in a residence hall, complete an essay writing course, participate in multi-faceted learning activities, and gain exposure to campus resources and community. The Uplift
PLUS Writing Instructor will deliver the essential service of providing instruction for the Uplift
PLUS writing course. Writing Instructors are responsible for teaching and supporting students through the college admissions process, particularly with drafting, editing, and finalizing their college admissions essay.
- Uplift PLUS Writing Instructors are expected to lead classes the weeks of July 7-11 and 14-18, 2025 from 9:00am-10:30am.
Conduct in-person classes with an assigned group of Uplift PLUS students, track class attendance.- Create lesson plans and prepare content for class sessions (this may include PowerPoint presentations, handouts, etc.). Examples of topics to cover include:
- Elements of a story (setting, characters, plot, etc.)
- Literary devices (dialogue, imagery)
- Figurative language
- Strategies for writing a personal narrative
- Analyzing exemplar college admissions essays
- Peer review/editing
- Provide constructive feedback to students on their written materials
- Communicate with students as needed
- Support students with writing their Common Application essays and UNC supplemental essay responses
- Students are expected to have a final draft of their college admission essays complete by the end of the program

Minimum Experience/Education |
- Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
- Must have at least 1 year experience teaching English/Language Arts, Writing, college prep, or another writing-intensive subject OR experience with teaching how to write college admissions essays

- Must abide by all University policies, Code of Conduct, and civic laws
- This position must successfully pass a Criminal Background Check
- Complete the University Protection of Minors Training on May 17, 2025
- Term of employment will be two weeks from July 6-19, 2025

- Candidates with at least 2-3 years of experience in one or more of the following areas are preferred:
- Teaching English/Language Arts, Writing, College Preparation, or another writing-intensive subject
- Instructing students on how to write college admissions essays
Ideal candidates should demonstrate advanced skills in:
- Critical thinking and creative problem-solving
- Time management and strong attention to detail
- Verbal and written communication, including public speaking
- Decision-making and managing multiple priorities
- Assessment and evaluation
- Handling sensitive information with discretion
- Working independently as well as collaboratively
- Additionally, candidates should possess a working knowledge of university resources.
