Overview:

This position requires conducting research in robotics, with a focus on the automated disassembly of hydrogen fuel cells. The researcher will lead ORNL's efforts to become a leader in automated disassembly by advancing research in commercial and technological solutions for de-manufacturing to enable material and component reclamation and/or recycling.

Purpose:

The Department of Energy's Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the Systems Automation and Monitoring Research (SAMR) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a capable researcher to conduct projects, expand research capabilities, and manage R&D in support of the manufacturing R&D portfolio. The specific focus of this position is research in robotics and automated hardware disassembly.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to R&D projects and lead the expansion of research efforts in automated disassembly.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments and other tasks supporting R&D initiatives.
  • Lead and manage large technical projects related to advanced manufacturing.
  • Guide and mentor students and interns.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or related field completed within the last five years, with a focus on robotics and automation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building and leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project schedules, scopes, and budgets.

Special Requirements:

Applicants cannot have received their PhD more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
