U.S. Political Correspondent (Level 1 Journalist)

Thomson Reuters
United States, D.C., Washington
1333 H Street Northwest (Show on map)
Apr 25, 2025

Reuters is looking for a talented correspondent to join our team covering U.S. politics and Congress. This role involves breaking news on legislative dealmaking on Capitol Hill, looking at how Congress's action (and inaction) affects American life and will include a considerable amount of campaign coverage when the 2026 midterm races heat up. This role will also look at politics outside Washington, including how lawmakers interact with their constituents at a time of dramatic change in American life.

The successful candidate will tell the inside story of legislative battles and the political wrangling in Congress, as well as the upcoming election campaign, at a time when American political norms are being tested.

About the Role

As U.S. Political Correspondent, you will:

  • Break news concerning the legislative dealmaking on Capitol Hill and national U.S. political stories.
  • Develop and cultivate new and existing sources both inside and outside Congress to produce exclusive and enterprising stories.
  • Think creatively about sourcing and will travel as needed to build contacts.
  • Collaborate within the newsroom and work closely with colleagues who have sources in various areas.

About You

You're a fit for the role of U.S. Political Correspondent if you have:

  • Proven skill at reporting and writing distinctive, ambitious, agenda-setting stories
  • Ability to cultivate non-obvious sources and to gain access to exclusive documents
  • A track record of original, high-impact story ideas
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Understanding of multi-media elements to enhance stories, from graphics to pictures and video.
  • A record of breaking news

***Please Note: Completed applications must be submitted by Sunday, May 18th. Early applications are encouraged.
