About the Job

The Lindsey Lab at the University of Minnesota is recruiting a postdoctoral associate to contribute to an NIH-funded project on microbe-mediated asexual reproduction. The lab uses insect models with a major focus on Wolbachia and other intracellular infections that alter animal reproduction. Research projects are typically interdisciplinary and integrate genomics, molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, and organismal approaches.

Major Areas of Accountability

70% Research Activities

  • Lead the design and execution of original research projects related to the evolution and mechanisms of insect-microbe interactions and asexual reproduction.
  • Maintain organized records of experiments, results, samples, protocols, code, and data.

15% Presentation and Publication of Data

  • Attend and contribute to regular lab meetings and communicate regularly with the PI.
  • Communicate research findings through presentation at scientific conferences.
  • Manuscript preparation, including statistical analysis, data visualization, writing, and editing.

10% Supervisory

  • The postdoctoral associate will work with undergraduate and graduate students in the lab and is expected to foster the development of junior lab members.

5% Professional Development

  • The candidate and PI will work together to set career development goals that might include grant writing, conference attendance, and/or other training opportunities.
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications *All essential qualifications must be fully documented on application materials.

  • PhD in Biology, Evolution, Entomology or related field conferred prior to position start date.
  • Research experience in at least two of the following areas: host-microbe interactions, insect development/reproduction, genomics, microbiology.
  • Demonstrated experience with essential molecular techniques (e.g., PCR-based assays, gel electrophoresis, nucleotide extractions, primer design).
  • Ability to build and maintain positive and productive interpersonal relationships with a diverse and dynamic laboratory team, colleagues, and collaborators.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, meticulous record-keeping and organizational skills, excellent time-management, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and ability to perform tasks requiring fine motor skills.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication.
  • A strong publication record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with insect experimental models.
  • Demonstrated success in collaborative research environments.
  • Familiarity with statistical analyses, bioinformatics, command-line programming, and high performance computing clusters.
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally work weekend hours due to study organism life cycles(<5% time).
  • The ideal candidate will be a team player, who is proactive, open-minded, and creative, with an enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in foundational biological scientific research.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $62,000.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience

The initial appointment will be for one year and is renewable contingent upon progress and funding. The starting date is negotiable; as early as May 15th, 2025. This is a 100% time, 40 hours per week position.
