Departmental Overview

Berkeley Public Health (BPH) aims to improve population health, especially for the most vulnerable, through interdisciplinary collaborations, preeminent education, and transformational research. Established in 1943, BPH is a professional school on the UC Berkeley campus that comprises six academic divisions and nearly 30 research centers and programs. The California Center for Outbreak Readiness, co-directed by Joseph Lewnard (UC Berkeley) and Sara Tartof (Kaiser Permanente Southern California) as a Center for Innovation within CDC's InsightNet program. This network focuses on training, analytical tool development, and advancing the analysis and use of data about infectious disease spread. The network brings together more than 100 academic and private entities, and state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) health departments in a collaborative partnership, The network is structured into three categories, Innovators, Integrators, and Implementers, who develop, test, and implement forward-thinking outbreak analytic solutions for CDC, health departments, and other decision-makers across the country. This position is responsible for management and analysis of data for the PI's studies of infectious disease modeling. This position involves reading in, cleaning, geocoding, analyzing, and interpreting a wide variety of research data, and may include literature reviews and analyzing collected information according to established statistical methods, preparing datasets, reports/presentations/publications, as well as charts, tables, and other visual aids for such reports/presentations/publications.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts exposure, outcome and covariate studies in support of research proposals and protocols. This will include formatting of datasets for application of statistical analysis methods at the proper resolution in terms of observation units, and accurate coding of exposures and outcomes in such data. The individual will then apply statistical inference methods to the prepared data, advised by the supervisor, and extract outputs for interpretation and reporting (e.g. in tables, figures, or reports).
  • Gathers and analyzes research data; prepares and summarizes information and / or recommendations. This will include creation of analysis datasets that merge observations across differing sources at the applicable level of resolution; as well as searching for appropriate data sources to support planned analyses, advised by the supervisor.
  • Maintains and develops research gathering, retrieval and reporting systems. This will include creation of detailed and searchable data dictionaries for all datasets created and annotated source code enabling recreation of data files from primary source information.
  • Conducts literature reviews related to topics and methods related to study questions. This involve exhaustive search and retrieval of relevant studies and critical appraisal of the underlying methods and conclusions in relation to the study questions, identifying where new approaches may offer an advantage.
  • Prepares reports and/or analyses for internal department constituents. These will span progress updates to draft sections of manuscripts for critical revision in preparation for publication.
  • Contributes to team-wide discussions, progress updates via virtual and in-person meetings.
  • Participates in workshops, trainings, and other professional development activities; may participate in committees, projects, and other service activities.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of research function: This includes but is not limited to principles of observational epidemiologic study designs, epidemiology of vaccine-preventable infectious diseases, and methods for studying the effectiveness of vaccines and other infectious disease countermeasures under both experimental and real-world conditions
  • Working skills in statistical analysis, systems programming, database design and data security measures: These include use of generalized linear models, survival analysis methods, multiple imputation, inverse propensity weighting, and other statistical methods applicable to infectious disease epidemiology and datasets
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing: This includes experience developing materials for and delivering presentations in academic conferences or similar professional settings, and writing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
