The Building Engineering Services Group (BES) provides mechanical, electrical, plumbing, site civil, structural, and specialty design services for a wide variety of buildings that include public, municipal, private, and Federal project types across the region and globally. With a team of experienced staff in specific market sectors such as Healthcare, Science and Technology, Data Centers, Higher Education, Federal, Transportation, Water, and Resources facilities, we provide engineering excellence for our clients. We have an industry leading focus on sustainable design and energy conservation.

The HDR BES group in New Jersey is looking for a Fire Protection Engineer/Specialist to join our team.

Primary Responsibilities



  • In the role of Fire Protection Engineer/Specialist, we'll count on you to:
  • Support and lead the fire protection portions of complex projects including hospitals, research facilities, data centers, and other facility types
  • Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard and advanced engineering techniques and procedures to make recommendations on a broad range of fire protection issues
  • Support and lead design of fire protection systems including wet, dry, and specialty systems
  • Take responsibility for drawings and specifications, meeting schedules and budgets, and directing assigned staff
  • Meet with clients and contractors as required
  • Capable of laying out sprinkler head locations and standpipes
  • Develop hydraulic calculations for sprinklers and standpipes using computer software programs
  • Interpret engineering data for designers and drafters
  • Check the drawings on a continuing basis to ensure accuracy and completeness and oversee deliverables to clients for quality control
  • Mentor and develop the skills of designers and drafters
  • Perform field verification and take-offs of existing systems for renovation projects
  • Review and summarize applicable codes and for inclusion in the project basis of design, drawings, and specifications
  • Coordinate fire protection work with other disciplines and consultants
  • Review shop drawings and answer requests for information
  • Assist with writing project specifications as required for the fire protection scope of work
  • Visit project sites as requested or as contractually required to monitor construction progress and resolve issues in the field
  • Perform other duties as needed


Preferred Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely related engineering discipline
  • Fire Protection PE License preferred and required for the title of "Fire Protection Engineer." Candidates who are hired without a state issued Fire Protection PE License will have a title of "Fire Protection Specialist"
  • Fire alarm, life safety, and detection systems design experience a plus
  • Relevant NFPA and NICET certifications a plus
  • Proficiency in Revit a plus
  • Preference given to local candidates

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a closely related field or a High School diploma with a combination of education and relevant experience
  • Entry Level NFPA, ICC Certifications or other specialized credentials related to the field of Fire & Life Safety
  • Strong computer skills using AutoCAD and Microsoft Office
  • Specialty software experience need to perform designs specific to area of expertise.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
