How can you make an impact?

As a Lead Software Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, developing and optimizing McGraw Hill's eCommerce platform, the core revenue engine driving our digital and print business. Your work will ensure that millions of students and educators across K-12, Higher Education, Professional, and international segments have seamless access to digital learning materials in today's hybrid and remote learning environments. You will be asked to play the role of a solution architect on key strategic initiatives, focusing on designing our next generation B2B eCommerce capabilities. You will lead and mentor a team of engineers, drive technical excellence, and enhance the best practices across the organization.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

What You'll Do:

  • Work with senior business and technology stakeholders to understand our end-to-end customer value chain, help define areas of improvement and design elegant solutions to meet those business needs
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering Leadership to refine product backlogs and development roadmaps
  • Lead feature development and bug fixes, ensuring high performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Champion engineering best practices, emphasizing quality, maintainability, and security.
  • Advocate for an exceptional user experience, ensuring our solutions are intuitive and impactful.
  • Manage & mentor a team of 5-6 engineers, conduct performance reviews, career development planning, and foster a culture of growth, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Promote knowledge sharing across teams and influence broader engineering strategies
  • Identify & address technical debt, providing cost-benefit analysis and prioritization recommendations.
  • Conduct insightful code reviews, helping elevate team-wide technical capabilities

What You Bring:

  • 8+ years of experience in developing eCommerce applications or enterprise software.
  • Expertise in both frontend and backend development, with strong architectural knowledge.
  • Experience leading distributed engineering teams, including coaching, conducting performance reviews, and fostering career growth.
  • Strong proficiency in cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS
  • Deep understanding of scalability, performance tuning, caching, and security best practices.
  • Strong database expertise, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, and Redis.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and DevOps tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Knowledge of authentication & authorization frameworks (OAuth, JWT, SAML, SSO)
  • Experience with microservices architecture, and event-driven systems (Kafka, AWS SNS/SQS).
  • Familiarity with test-driven development (TDD), automated testing frameworks, and code quality tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot production issues, optimize application performance, and implement robust monitoring solutions (New Relic, Prometheus, Datadog, AWS CloudWatch).
  • Passion for mentoring engineers and cultivating a collaborative development culture

  • Front-end: TypeScript, Angular, NgRx/RxJS, Playwright
  • Databases: Relational (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL Datastores (Redis, Elastic, etc)
  • DevOps & CI/CD: GitHub (version control & Actions), SonarQube, Docker, New Relic, DataDog
  • Cloud Services: AWS (EC2/ECS, RDS, CloudFront, S3, Lambdas, and many others) * Collaboration Tools: JIRA, Confluence, Zoom, Slack, Office 365

The pay range for this position is between $124,000- $180,000 annually, however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.An annual bonus plan may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical and/or other benefits, depending on the position offered.
