Responsibilities

Job Summary
The Infection Prevention - Surveillance Specialist is responsible for conducting comprehensive surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and surgical site infections (SSIs), primarily using electronic medical records (EMRs) to identify infections in accordance with NHSN criteria. This role requires an in-depth understanding of infection surveillance protocols, and the specialist is expected to stay current with definition changes, ensure proper documentation, and provide timely and accurate infection data. The role also includes responsibilities for monthly reporting, education and training, communicable disease reporting, and supporting infectious disease exposures. The Infection Prevention - Surveillance Specialist must be available to provide in-person campus support as needed and ensure proper collaboration with the Infection Prevention team.
  • Conduct ongoing, timely surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and surgical site infections (SSIs) using electronic medical records (EMRs), in alignment with NHSN definitions and criteria. Identify, track, and classify infections accurately based on clinical, microbiological and epidemiological data, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with infection prevention protocols. Stay current with NHSN definition updates and changes to infection reporting protocols, adjusting surveillance practices accordingly. Collaborate with the Infection Prevention team to assess infection trends and identify areas of concern in surveillance data.
  • Prepare and present weekly and monthly summary reports of infection surveillance activities to the Infection Prevention department and leadership. Analyze surveillance data to identify infection trends, patterns, and areas for improvement. Create data visualizations, graphs, and presentations to support infection control decision-making and provide evidence-based recommendations.
  • Provide education and training to clinical and non-clinical staff on proper infection surveillance methods, NHSN definitions, and infection reporting requirements. Tailor educational materials to meet the needs of various departments, ensuring understanding and compliance with infection prevention practices. Collaborate with other infection prevention team members to deliver training sessions as part of ongoing staff development.
  • Assist with the investigation and management of infectious disease exposures, in collaboration with Employee Health and external agencies as needed. Provide guidance on post-exposure follow-up, infection prevention measures, and documentation processes.
  • Support the communicable disease reporting process by ensuring timely and accurate submission of infection data to relevant health authorities, including NHSN, CDC, and local public health departments. Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to communicable disease tracking and reporting
  • Provide on-site, in-person support for infection surveillance, education, and other infection prevention activities as needed across campuses. Collaborate with infection prevention staff, physicians, and other healthcare providers to ensure effective infection prevention practices are in place.

Education
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Medical Lab-Technology or health related field Required

Experience
5 years of experience in an Acute Care and Infection Prevention and Control w/ surveillance responsibilities Required

Licenses and Certifications
Certified Infection Control (CIC) Required
